In Texas a few years ago a judge raised a Black woman’s bail for “defying” his order to say “yes” instead of “yea.”
Can’t tell you how many times a person I have represented has gotten arrested & charged with criminal contempt for knocking on his moms door after an order protection issued she didn’t even want.
I started my public defense career as an intern in New Orleans soon after the office started & I remember the head of the office routinely being dragged out in handcuffs & processed after merely making legal arguments in front of judges who refused to hear them.
Right now, judges in the Bronx are issuing arrest warrants for people who fail to appear for remote hearings months after they’ve been rescheduled because of COVID for things like low level drug possession, petit larceny, jumping the turnstile, & driving on a suspended license.

NYPD rioting & assaulting civilians in NYC. This billboard last month. Times Square. Across from NYPD station. “Hey NYPD. It’s us. NYC residents. The ones who pay your salary. We paid $300 million to settle your lawsuits. You paid nothing. We need to talk.”
The $300 million to settle NYPD lawsuits over the last five years could instead fund proven non-police violence interruption programs and summer youth employment in every neighborhood in NYC for the next 5 years.
The $327 million per year that NYC residents pay for police in schools with no impact on public safety, could instead fund full four-year scholarships for over 4000 students to attend NY state colleges.
The best and most unexpected part of this video as it :32 when some dude just nonchalantly walks behind her in a t-shirt reading something & paying her no attention whatsoever like he has no idea she’s even there.
“Kettling” is a hyper-violent, dangerous, escalation tactic by police. Traps a crowd of people in a confined space for a prolonged time. Human Rights Watch just found the NYPD committed international human rights violations in the Bronx for the tactic in June. Tonight the NYPD:
The investigation by Human Rights Watch (@hrw) found that NYPD planned a coordinated assault on hundreds of Bronx protestors in June. Trapped them 10 minutes before curfew to justify attacking them for being out past curfew. Hundreds injured. All on film. hrw.org/news/2020/09/3…
The racist, brutal, lying NYPD commissioner Dermot Shea (@NYPDShea) didn’t just refuse to apologize for the brutal planned assault of thousands of peaceful protestors. He CONDEMNED the suggestion the NYPD did anything wrong. And Bill de Blasio stands behind this guy 100%.
🚨Attention journalists: Please read this guide on how best to report this week in a way that doesn’t allow Trump to “breed chaos & stoke violence” to steal the election. Please don’t enable him. Thanks. theappeal.org/a-media-guide-…
“It is unlikely we will know the results of the presidential election on election night, and the media should refrain from giving credence to claims of victory when it is still statistically possible, or even likely, that another candidate won.”
“The media should avoid amplifying fraudulent claims of voter suppression and errors with mail-in ballots to avoid giving credibility to false fears that the election is somehow “rigged.” This likely means refusing to report on these baseless claims.”
Yes, this guy committed massive financial offenses & was privileged. But he was just thrown in solitary confinement as punishment for appearing on a podcast & talking. Solitary confinement is torture. It must be eradicated. nyti.ms/34qctp8
Try to imagine. A single day in a cell only slightly bigger than average elevator. 22.5 out of 24 hrs/day. When out, small solitary cage. No recreation equipment. No group activity. No programs. No sky. It’s dark. Loud. Smells terrible. Multiply by weeks, months, years, decades.
“Solitary confinement causes extreme suffering, particularly over prolonged periods of months or years. Effects include anxiety, panic, rage, paranoia, hallucinations, and, in some cases, suicide.” bit.ly/2VPqVAg
Neko Wilson. 38 years old. Finally released today after serving 479 days in county jail w/ no bail & no release hearing. Neko was incarcerated on July 2, 2019 because of a probation violation for a 17 year old marijuana case. The U.S. criminal legal system is death. More:
“I still can’t believe this. I’m free. I can’t tell you how scary it’s been locked up during COVID w/ no end in sight. I'll now spend time w/ my family & get my life back on track so I can help others like my other brother Lance, who's incarcerated in Southern California.”
Neko's brother, Jacque (@jacquewilson1), is a public defender in San Francisco. Fought tirelessly for over a year for justice for Neko. Still fighting for his other brother. “Neko has been a political prisoner of the war on drugs, the war on poor people & war on Black People."
