Let's talk about how dangerous this is, shall we? First of all Trump and his family, aided by the likes of Gingrich, Ingraham, Jones et al, are attempting to subvert a democratic election because their man is going to lose.

In calling on their supporters to 'fight' this outcome they are inciting civil war and violence with a view to a coup. They are also inviting physical attacks on and disruption of counting stations and increasing the risk that Biden or other Dems may be attacked

If the counts go against Trump, and he stays in the White House, the risk of violence obviously intensifies. But even if he doesn't, the wilful delegitimising of the democratic process will further poison American society, emboldening Timothy McVeigh-types in the years to come

While 'lone wolf' assassins seek their moment of glory, far-right militias will continue to take matters into their own hands, opposing lockdowns, seizing 'control' of neighbourhods and territory, conspiring with police. The GOP will seethe with bitterness, hatred and resentment

Trump's 'movement' will oppose attempts to bring the 'China virus' under control: 'Big government'/'Soros'/'Corrupt Dems cheated the election' etc. Forget quarantines, masks, vaccines - this lot will just dump the lot in the Qanon drawer with the rest of the dirty linen

Every form of fanaticism will be emboldened. Consensus will become impossible. People will be killed. Democrat politicians will become targets. American society will continue to fragment and polarise till it becomes ungovernable.

There is a very real possibility of fascism. Which is why these efforts need to be resisted now. And condemned now. And any GOP politician who doesn't condemn these truly sinister developments is complicit. Any world leader who remains silent is also complicit.

Any journalist who doesn't call out these lies is also complicit. This is not a drill. This is the real thing. A cabal of white supremacist gangsters, supported by the most corrupt political party in the democratic world, is trying to seize power in front of our eyes.

So let's hope that American society mobilises to prevent this outcome, and when it does, it will have the support of millions across the world who know perfectly well that what Trump is trying to do in the US, others would like to do elsewhere
