have been saying this for months: it's a fucking miracle we've gotten where we these past few days without more of this or worse happening, it's not over yet, and chiding takes about justified anxiety over stochastic terror are a bad look
the fact that there have been bad takes and much of the back and forth about a new "Civil War" has betrayed a set of blinkered assumptions both about the past and about the character of quotidian, structuring US political violence is not an excuse
the fact that many USers don't know about Dirty Wars in our own hemisphere, about the Years of Lead, or about what cops do all the time and can only think in terms of CSA vs Union 2.0 betrays exceptionalist, impoverished ideas of both civil war and what passes for civil society
one last thing: I don't think most people have ever fully processed how and why mainstream US memory and discourse has memoryholed extremist political violence and state repression in the 1970s - 1990s and we may well be due for getting a mix of the worst of both. so don't

the new Call of Duty: Cold War comes out next week, so on tonight's stream we'll be playing Black Ops 2 (2012). arguably the most singularly fucked up game in the franchise, it'll send us to do operator shit with Jonas Savimbi in the Angolan Civil War / South African Border Wars
topics: right versus left wing internationalisms, the Cold War as race war, the birth of the modern PMC/mercenary industrial complex, the rhetoric of "child soldiers," homosocial operator family romance, and, yeah, probably the fucking election | 8PM EST twitch.tv/carteblanchfie…
CC @dbessner this might be of interest!

though it's hard to talk about on here without sounding reductive, Trump's gains with men (except for white ones!) suggests some real grim dynamics involving class on the one hand and the complex, paradoxical configurations of patriarchal violence in our emergent police populism
I should also say that the ability of this coalition to coalesce around a tranparently patriachal ghoul like Trump - whose peformance of masculinity is hardly a heartland stereotype, and is downright campy - reveals more than just the centrality of malice and gaslighting to this
like it's scarier precisely b/c latching on to him despite his clownish, absurdly decrepit masculinity (and his racism, which increasing numbers of men who aren't white appear able to look past) speaks to the urgent and desperate conditions which preceded + intensified under him

our schools already discipline our children to accept gun murder as as natural and inevitable a phenomenon as fire or hurricanes, so I guess at least we're consistent about our pedagogies of disposability and resignation
can you imagine the entire ecosystem of virus security consultants, biometric surveillance tech grifters, and sacrifice mindset trainers we're gonna get

so yesterday the Mayor of St Louis read the names and addresses of protestors who support police defunding on TV and just now the president has posted fifteen separate "attempt to identify" notices featuring photos of individual protestors
it's getting hotter, the plague is spreading, tens of millions are unemployed, and hurricanes and waves of evictions are coming. the election is still five months away, seems unlikely we'll get subtler about greenlighting scapegoats for extrajudicial killings and vigilante murder
tens of millions of USers are apparently copacetic with reopening and a quarter million plus dead or more. the horror of what we've long normalized and the rapidity with which we're metabolizing even more is stunning

it really feels like, from the Epstein saga to police committing judicial murders to Barr's antics to Mnuchin's et al's corruption, to the horrid COVID response, a basic throughline of this moment is a particularly blatant combination of dynamics of illegitimacy and impunity 1/2
and bracketing any other considerations about their meaning or value (which run everywhere from urgent to far less) a lot of convulsions sweeping the public sphere - from tearing down statues (which is rigtheous and profound IMO!) to endless debates over "cancellation" 2/3
(which are often saturated with all kinds of bad faith) what we are also witnessing is a correlative desire for SOME kind of accountability, however symbolic, displaced, substitutive, whatever, and an urgent need for collectivities to form and enact it dramatically 3/4
