2020 Show runner: Ok, whatcha got?

Writers: Get this; we start off the year by…impeaching the president!

Show runner: So that's the theme of the season?

Writers: No, it's a red herring. While he's being impeached he finds out about a deadly virus spreading around the globe.
Show runner: So he fights the virus and saves the day?

Writers: No, just the opposite. He figures it will hurt Black and Brown people in mostly democratic states worst, so he does…NOTHING!

Show runner: Won't that ruin the economy?

Writers: YES!
Show runner: So is THAT the theme for this season?

Writers: Wait there's more. A man named George Floyd gets murdered by the police in May, and it sparks international Black Lives Matter protests.

Show runner: This seems like a lot.
Writers: We're just getting started. It's also AN ELECTION YEAR.

Show runner: Waitaminute. How are people supposed to protest AND vote during a global pandemic?

Writers: That's just it! 45* will play the virus down.
Writers: Meanwhile democrats will tell their voters the only way to win is to vote in numbers too big to manipulate, so they should vote early by mail.

Show runner: Isn't the USPS a federal organization?

Writers: Exactly. 45* will sabotage the USPS.
Show runner: You're really stretching credulity here.

Writers: Stay with us. The US economy will tank, there'll be millions unemployed, tens of millions facing homelessness, they'll have 100,000 a day getting infected by the virus… and 45*'s support won't diminish! And then…
Writers: RGB dies.

Show runner: Wait, what?

Writers: Yup, there'll be an open seat on the Supreme Court, and the GOP will rush to fill it, like a week before the actual election.

Show runner: You are really pushing the limits of suspended disbelief. What happens next?
Writers: So the election comes, and there's rampant voter suppression, and threats 45* won't cede power. Everyone is tense on election night, wondering if they're witnessing the rebirth of fascism. And then…
Writers: THEY START COUNTING MAIL IN BALLOTS! Cities like Detroit, Atlanta, and Philadelphia with majority Black populations show up in droves, dancing all the way to the ballot box. And at the last possible moment, Black voters save democracy!
Show runner (wipes brow): And then what happens?
Writers: Check it. There's a Black WOMAN VP. The senate is tied and she's the deciding vote. They PACK the cabinet with progressives, and balance out the courts.
Show runner: Isn't there pushback?

Writers: Oh there's a TON of resentment, but they give the country universal healthcare, a living wage, sensible gun laws, protect a woman's right to choose, invest in green energy, commit to reversing climate change, and stop the pandemic.
Show runner: No one is gonna believe this.

Writers: JUST WATCH YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

Tomorrow We Gon Talk.

Yesterday the world celebrated as if we'd ended WW2. We danced, sang, cried, laughed. We screamed and howled, unclenched our jaws and unslumped our shoulders for the first time in four years.

Last night we slept. Today we'll brunch.
Tomorrow y'all are gonna consider just how close we came. Because Biden's win isn’t a spectacular victory:

It is a very narrowly avoided catastrophe.
Tomorrow we're going to talk about 70 million people who clearly want to go back in time to a point where their abhorrent behavior wasn't just tolerated, it was celebrated and embraced.

We'll talk about men in general, and white men in particular.

Liberal Fuckshit: Why We're Not Doing This Again.

There are two types of people who voted for 45*:
People who want to kill people who look like me, and people who are okay with that.

The goddamned knife isn't out of our backs and pundits want us to console our oppressors?
We don't even get ONE DAY to feel good about stopping fascism.

Get ALL the fuck outta here.

We've been holding our breath, watching violence escalate and rhetoric become policy. So let'e be clear about this:

We get to celebrate.
We don't have to offer forgiveness to the remorseless. And we get to set policy. Elections have consequences.

For everyone committed to protecting white supremacy at all costs:

WE SEE YOU.

Let's talk about this.

See that spike in democratic voter registrations? It can be DIRECTLY LINKED to BLM protests.

No one has fought harder, more consistently for FREEDOM in this country than Black people. That moral arc of the universe MLK talked about? Image
It bends because WE FUCKING BEND IT.

Black metropolitan areas Detroit, ATL, and Philadelphia are SAVING DEMOCRACY.

Which will give us the first Black WOMAN VP.
If you feel a sense of relief that 45* will not get a second term to drag this country into full fascism, thank Stacey Abrams.

But don't think you get to IGNORE US ever again.

Four years ago yesterday, I woke up believing this country was ready to elect its first woman president. I challenged anyone who'd listen not just to defeat her opponent, but to defeat the conditions that gave him rise.

I admit: I underestimated the depth of US misogyny.
The current administration wasted no time slathering insults on political injuries. In the past four years, the breathless whispers through clutched pearls of "that's not who we are" can be matched only by the wails in the past 24 hours of "I thought we were better than this."
This is who this country has always been.
It has never been better than this.

If you are Black in the US you are ill-afforded the luxury of racial naiveté. We know this country better than it knows itself, because we've had to.

The Fight isn't new.

It's been going on for centuries. You may be new to The Fight, so you need to know:

The Fight isn't about you.
You are part of a larger story. Yes, you have a role to play.

You are a steward.
As previous generations fought to make your world better, so it's incumbent on you to do what you can for those who pick up The Fight when we are gone.

Yes, you will be impacted by The Fight, win or lose. Your life matters.
Right now matters. However, the sacrifices you make and the examples you set will become the platform for future generations.

A few words on defeating fascism:

The last time the United States was as divided as they are now was over the abolition of slavery. We couldn't agree on some very basic human rights, so we went to war. Over 600,000 Americans were killed, more than in WW1 and WW2 combined. /1
When the North won, they knew they couldn't impose punitive damages on the South, because the United States was still an agrarian society, and so economically dependent on the South.
With this in mind, provisions were built into the 13th Amendment, and the concessions of The Reconstruction were established.

These concessions led immediately to peonage, Jim Crow, segregation, and finally the current age of mass incarceration.
