A THREAD on thought provoking ideas by Stephen Hawking:

1/

It surprises me how disinterested we are today about things like physics, space, the universe and philosophy of our existence, our purpose, our final destination. Its a crazy world out there. Be curious.
2/

We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star.

But we can understand the Universe.

That makes us something very special.
3/

The thing about smart people is that they seem like crazy people to dumb people.
4/

I have spent my life travelling across the universe, inside my mind.
5/

I am just a child who has never grown up.

I still keep asking these ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions.

Occasionally, I find an answer.
6/

Although I cannot move and I have to speak through a computer, in my mind I am free.
7/

My goal is simple.

It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all.
8/

I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die.
9/

You cannot understand the glories of the universe without believing there is some Supreme Power behind it.
10/

So long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose it had a creator.

But if the universe is really completely self-contained, having no boundary or edge, it would have neither beginning nor end: it would simply be.

What place, then, for a creator?
11/

I believe the simplest explanation is, there is no God.

No one created the universe and no one directs our fate.

This leads me to a profound realization that there probably is no heaven and no afterlife either...
...We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe and for that, I am extremely grateful.
12/

When we see the Earth from space, we see ourselves as a whole. We see the unity, and not the divisions.

It is such a simple image with a compelling message; one planet, one human race.
13/

The whole history of science has been the gradual realization that events do not happen in an arbitrary manner, but that they reflect a certain underlying order, which may or may not be divinely inspired.
14/

If time travel is possible, where are the tourists from the future?
15/

My expectations were reduced to zero when I was 21. Everything since then has been a bonus.
16/

For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals.

Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination.

We learned to talk and we learned to listen...
...Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together to build the impossible.
17/

The rate of progress is so rapid that what one learns at school or university is always a bit out of date.

Only a few people can keep up with the rapidly advancing frontier of knowledge, and they have to devote their whole time to it and specialize in a small area...
...The rest of the population has little idea of the advances that are being made or the excitement they are generating.

A THREAD on thought provoking ideas by Bertrand Russell:

1/

If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have paradise in a few years. Image
2/

The secret of happiness is this: let your interest be as wide as possible and let your reactions to the things and persons who interest you be as far as possible friendly rather than hostile.
3/

Anything you're good at contributes to happiness.

A THREAD on thought provoking ideas by Descartes:

1/

The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest men of past centuries, in which they reveal to us none but the best of their thoughts.
2/

Some years ago I was struck by the large number of falsehoods that I had accepted as true in my childhood, and by the highly doubtful nature of the whole edifice that I had subsequently based on them...
...I realized that it was necessary, once in the course of my life, to demolish everything completely and start again right from the foundations if I wanted to establish anything at all in the sciences that was stable and likely to last.

A THREAD on thought provoking ideas and insights by Albert Einstein:

1/

The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives.
2/

It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.
3/

Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.

A THREAD on thought provoking ideas by Marie Curie:

1/

I am among those who think that science has great beauty.

A scientist in his laboratory is not a mere technician: he is also a child confronting natural phenomena that impress him as though they were fairy tales. Image
2/

We must not forget that when radium was discovered no one knew that it would prove useful in hospitals.

The work was one of pure science.

And this is a proof that scientific work must not be considered from the point of view of the direct usefulness of it...
...It must be done for itself, for the beauty of science, and then there is always the chance that a scientific discovery may become, like the radium, a benefit for mankind.

A THREAD on key ideas from the book "Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything" by Joshua Foer:

1/

Roman orators argued that the art of memory—the proper retention and ordering of knowledge—was a vital instrument for the invention of new ideas.
2/

The brain best remembers things that are repeated, rhythmic, rhyming, structured, and above all easily visualized.
3/

When you want to get good at something, how you spend your time practicing is far more important than the amount of time you spend.

A THREAD on key ideas from the book "Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives" by Gretchen Rubin:

1/

Habits make change possible by freeing us from decision making and from using self-control.
2/

Technology is a good servant but a bad master.
3/

Self-measurement brings self-awareness, and self-awareness strengthens our self-control.
