My thoughts on Republicans' refusal to accept the election results: like everything else, it's driven by Trump and fear of Trump. And, for the moment anyway, I think it's all about optics more than it is about actual ratfuckery or attempts to change the outcome. [cont'd]
At the moment even GOP election officials on the state level are not buying this. It all changes if they do, but for now they're not. In the meantime, it's about everyone being afraid of being the first one to break with Trump so they don't get MAGA base wrath.
That could be personal fear but also party-wide fear. A schism between Trump people and still-employed Republicans is really bad for 2022 and 2024, so they have to wait for Trump to accept reality on his own before standing down. This is what is animating McConnell, etc.
The absolute worst outcome for Republicans is to have Trump spend the next two years going after them for having "betrayed" him because enough jackoffs will listen to whatever he says to tip elections. So they have to wait for the baby to stop crying.
Final thought: yes, the GOP's end game is to portray Biden as an illegitimate president. The problem is that 75 million+ voted for him and a non-trivial chunk of the 71M who didn't vote for him accept reality. [cont'd]
Trump lost because he believed the fervent loyalty of a super-motivated base which represents about 30-40% of the electorate would put him over. It didn't. And having like 100million or more voters realize you're bonkers isn't a viable path forward for a political party.

Today's newsletter is out! In it: my analysis of Jeff Luhnow suing the Astros. The word "chutzpah" comes to mind. But the definition of "chutzpah" does not include "dumb."

In fact, Luhnow is probably creating a very big problem for Major League Baseball. cupofcoffee.substack.com/p/cup-of-coffe…
There's a lot more in there too. This may be one of the more packed newsletters I've written. The little warning button that tells you you're reaching the limit was PARTICULARLY insistent today.
As for Luhnow, his case may or may not have legal merit. Lawsuits rise and fall for all manner of reasons. But as a gambit to get several million dollars of his salary paid it's pretty good, because MLB does NOT want its investigatory dirt, about any investigation, made public.

The only way to understand The New York Times is to accept that it is an addict and it's drug of choice is profiles of Trump supporters. They'll be doing these until the sun goes supernova.
Please do some stories about people in Georgia who voted for Biden. Do stories about young people. About people of color. Do SOMETHING different for the first time if four+ damn years.
How does that workflow even go? Does an editor say "hey, I know what we need: a story about old white people in a diner who still support Trump. Johnson, get on it!" or does a reporter suggest it and the editor says "Wow, where do you get these ideas?! Bring me back gold!"

The drive out here goes through rural Licking County. There were about 75% fewer Trump signs on the drive here today than last weekend.
And yes that’s a @JasonIsbell Reunions shirt. But the line for today is from The Nashville Sound: “There can’t be more of them than us. There can’t be more.”

New Albany, Ohio. Now.

They saw me in my mask and one of them said “you wear a mask you’re probably voting for Biden.” I said “I can’t vote for Trump if he dies of COVID.” No immediate response.

Proud Boys are planning to march through New Albany, Ohio today, under the pretext of sticking it to the "wealthy elitists and corporations" who fund Biden. And Facebook, which has a data center here. I wonder if they've looked at the voting demographics of New Albany, Ohio much. Proud Boy flyer for a march today in New Albany.
This is the map from 2016. The blue is misleading. It includes my neighborhood which is an outlier (less wealthy than the rest; more diverse) and schools/stores apartments which don't have many people. All that red includes the "wealthy neighborhoods" they plan to march through. Voting map from 2016 for New Albany, Ohio
Here it is compared to the rest of the city. Columbus, in general, is very blue. They would be hard pressed to find a place in the city/suburbs more conservative than this, yet here they will be. 2016 voting map of the whole area

For her birthday, my brother shared this photo of my mom and him from (I'm gonna guess) 1982-83. She looks like the bassist for a band you were not cool enough to see and which broke up before they got a major label deal. Photo of my mom and my brot...
Her and my dad when they got married in 1967. She was still 18. He was 23. I show them photos from this day when they're being lame and ask them what happened to these people. My parents in 1967
Cat on the right, just this morning, had strong opinions about geese. Chick on the left, just this morning, told me that her big birthday plan was Dairy Queen. God love 'em.
