Target is to preserve 'beautiful building' in dwindling community for religious gatherings and wider cultural activities!
A campaign has been launched to save Margate Synagogue in Cliftonville, which has been put up for sale by the dwindling Orthodox community after it decided it could no longer manage the building.
To avoid the site being demolished or converted into flats, the campaign needs to raise around £400k. The idea is to maintain the building as a communal venue with hopes it can be used for both religious pursuits and cultural activities, servicing the town’s blossoming arts scene
The campaign is being spearheaded by klezmer cellist Francesca Ter-Berg (@FrancescaT_B ), who told the JC the synagogue was a “beautiful building” with the potential to be something that “celebrates the Jewish heritage and cultural contribution to the area.
“Margate was a very popular holiday destination for Jewish people from the 50s to the mid-90s.” Although vacation habits had changed, “there are a lot of Jewish people in the area who are interested in conserving [the building] and putting on Jewish events”.
She wanted the site to remain consecrated, so the remaining local Orthodox could meet for informal religious gatherings — there are not enough members to form a minyan.
The campaign hopes to attract donors to provide the initial funds to secure the building by stopping the auction, before crowdfunding the rest.
During the First World War, the then synagogue was used for prayer by Jewish soldiers stationed nearby before they went off to fight in France.
In the 1920s, the current building was constructed at a cost of around £6,000.
According to a report from 1928 from the Isle of Thanet Gazette on the laying of the building’s foundation stone, the synagogue was established to meet increasing demand from Jewish visitors.
In 2017, the shul was forced to cancel its Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services because of a lack of numbers. It has not held formal services since then.

The 2002 Rome Statute of the ICC defines the Crime of Apartheid in clear and succinct language.
Anyone wanting to accuse (or defend) Israel of it would benefit from giving it a quick read.
(cn: crimes against humanity, violence, sexual violence)
[1/9]
The 'crime of apartheid' means inhumane acts of a character similar to those referred to in paragraph 1, committed in the context of an institutionalised regime of systematic oppression and domination...
[2/9]
...by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regime.
Worth noting that "one apartheid policy" is a vague framing.
Apartheid, as defined by the 2002 Rome Statute, is "policies and practices", "inhumane acts" [note the plural] "committed for the purpose of establishing... domination by one racial group" [a system-wide definition]
Here is a neat little article explaining the difference + a helpful infographic!
She is getting beef from the Jewish Chronicle for saying something so obviously true: Israel is an Apartheid State
"Israel is an Apartheid State" is not antisemitic for several obvious reasons: (1) it doesn't express hostility towards Jews at all (2) it is clearly true (3) it isn't about Jews at all (4) lots of Jews say it all the time
On 7th September, 56 academics wrote to Facebook warning against adopting the IHRA Working-Definition of Antisemitism.
These are respected scholars in the study of antisemitism, Jewish history and the I/P conflict. It is an important intervention and so we post it here in full.
We, scholars specialized in antisemitism Jewish&Holocaust history & the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, are writing to you with regard to Facebooks policy & efforts to ban antisemitic content from your platform, as part of your companys wider struggle against hate speech & bigotry.
We are deeply concerned about the rise in antisemitism around the world. Antisemitism and all other forms of racism and bigotry pose a serious threat that must be fought most forcefully. We commend Facebook’s efforts in this regard and encourage you to intensify them.
We're going to post quotations from either Adolf Hitler or Theodore Herzl and will have to guess Who Said It?
We have edited the pronouns in the quotation which would have otherwise given the game away.
1. Let sovereignty be granted us over a portion of the earth's surface large enough to satisfy our rightful requirements as a nation. The rest we shall manage for ourselves.
