OUR VIEW:

The fears of many public health officials are becoming true, as all indications are that the U.S. is in the midst of a brutal surge.

Unfortunately, the U.S. enters this season with the public health community having squandered its credibility.

Early on, the American people were told that they had to go into lockdown for just a few weeks.

The purpose, everybody was told, was to “flatten the curve,” so there wasn’t a huge spike in cases at a given time that could collapse the medical system.

washex.am/38PanSi
The problem was that even after the curve had been flattened, and the medical system was in no way in danger, officials lobbied against efforts to reopen activity.
washex.am/38PanSi
"Flatten the curve" was replaced by some vague notion of returning to normal when things were "safe."

People have done without typical rituals from Memorial Day to July 4 to Labor Day.

In much of the nation, schools remain closed, despite the detrimental impact on children and families and the scant evidence that the virus poses a danger to either students or teachers or that schools have been a source of community spread.

Public health officials, political leaders, and media figures have demonstrated hypocrisy.

Though they warned against large gatherings, they cheered Black Lives Matters protests and pro-Biden victory celebrations in large cities. washex.am/36JWl1T
Though they advocated stringent rules that shut down businesses and canceled weddings and funerals, Pelosi managed to get a maskless hair cut, and Newsom attended a birthday party for a lobbyist pal at the elite French Laundry in wine country.

Given the credibility that has been shredded over the past eight months, leaders can probably count on a lot more civil disobedience in response to new lockdowns than they did in the spring.

Some pundits and a whole lot of excited Democrats project the Lone Star State is on the verge of going blue.

But the battle for Texas is likely to be a multiyear war of attrition that both parties are gearing up for, writes
@russell_nm.

The current state of civil-military relations is toxic.

The missing element is trust, the mutual respect and understanding between civilian and military leaders.

The Washington Examiner endorses @realDonaldTrump for president.

washex.am/2TvH4v8
His administration’s policy successes outweigh its failures. With the Abraham Accords, he proved you can advance Middle East peace while standing firmly with Israel.

He started treating Iran as the serious threat it is.

washex.am/2TvH4v8
Before COVID-19, Trump presided over the strongest U.S. economy in generations.

His deregulatory and tax reform agenda did more than generations of Democratic demagoguery to raise the wages of working-class families.

.@susanferrechio discusses the media's treatment of the Steele dossier versus Hunter Biden's emails

SF: "Now we have ethics? Ohh ok."

@BrianStelter: "Don't you dare. Don't you dare act like newsrooms didn't have ethics in 2017 & 2018."
Stelter also called @susanferrechio "bitter" about the Steele dossier during the exchange.

"I know you're bitter, I understand you have a lot of resentment..."
.@susanferrechio: "I didn't discard the Mueller stuff, I was much more skeptical because I knew the sourcing...

I had real reason to doubt that stuff... and it turned out a lot of it was a bunch of bunk."

Are the wheels coming off? 2020 is proving harder than 2016 for @realDonaldTrump.

Nearly everything that went right for Trump in 2016 has gone wrong this year, and he has dwindling opportunities to alter the dynamics of the campaign.

@jimantle explores the @realDonaldTrump's troubled reelection campaign.

"The future of our democracy is at stake."

"The Most Important Election Ever."

But is this really the most important election in the History of the United States?

@JayCaruso looks to the past for the answer.
