I would add that this sort of software 'trapdoor' is common in the Military-Industrial Complex, where its purpose is to take software written by contractors (a set of computer files) and put it in a gizmo they can't tell if it was accessed.

What's on the other side of the trapdoor (besides ALICE in Bloody Wonderland) is a compartmented (classified) program that may or may not exist.
