Some background on the 2030 petrol/diesel vehicle sales ban...

1️⃣ Does business back this policy? Resoundingly yes. 29 companies, including 5 of the UK's 6 biggest fleets, have been calling for this all year theclimategroup.org/our-work/press…
2️⃣ Who will drive this transition? Again, it's business. 60% of new cars and almost all new vans/trucks are bought by companies. Our #EV100 members, switching 700,000 vehicles on UK roads to EV by 2030, are the sharp end of the wedge. We then get these EVs cheaper second hand.
3️⃣ What about charging? Again (spot the theme yet?) it's business. Our #EV100 members are rolling out charging for staff and customers - crucial for people who can't charge at home - at 1200 UK locations by 2030. @Tesco is a cracking example theclimategroup.org/our-work/press…
4️⃣ What about the costs?

EVs are currently more expensive to buy, but battery costs have fallen 90% in 10 years, so they'll be cheaper to buy in just a few years, well before 2030. And they're ALREADY cheaper to run, because less wear & tear and electricity's cheaper than fuel.
5️⃣ Is this realistic?

New technologies always grow exponentially. It's only decade since the iPhone, now ubiquitous, was invented. EVs achieved 80%+ market share in Norway in September. BUT policy is key to driving the transition theclimategroup.org/sites/default/…
6️⃣ Where are we going to get all the electricity for all these electric cars?

I cannot overstate how much of a non-issue this is for @ng_eso. We'll have plenty of generation even with no coal and 1/3 less gas. Key is to max the benefits of smart charging wwf.org.uk/updates/wwf-20…

89% of jobs and value in UK auto are transferable to (or already in) EV production. This demand signal makes the UK a leading EV market, helping to crowd in investment and jobs in things like batteries and charging wwf.org.uk/updates/wwf-20…
8️ What about hybrids?

They've been a great choice in recent years. But no hybrid is zero-emission as they use fossil fuels.

There is a bit of wiggle room in the 2030 policy to be hashed out at a later date. But battery EVs will be cheaper than hybrids way before 2030 so 🤷
