On a drizzling evening of November 19, 1981, at around 19:30 to 20:00pm, Griffiths Mlungisi Mxenge was assassinated and his body was severely mutilated in an act of barbaric brutality.... 
His murderers used three okapi knives, a hunting knife and a wheel spanner because they were ordered not to kill him with a gun. They inflicted 45 lacerations and stab wounds that pierced his body, lungs, liver and heart. They slit his throat and cut off his ears....
They ripped open his stomach. The magistrate at the inquest into his death found that his death was caused by the act of some unknown person or persons. His murderers, self confessed....
They are Dirk Coetzee, Almond Nofomela, Joe Mamasela, Brian Ngqulunga and David Tshikalanga. All were policemen and agents of the apartheid government‘s death squads....
For 8 years no one knew who killed Mxenge until Almond Nofomela, one of the askaris exposed the existence of Vlakplaas in an affidavit he wrote on 19 October 1989, a day before his was to be hanged for killing a white farmer in Brits...
This saved him as the state wanted to hear more about his claims of death squads in South Africa. Dirk Coetzee, the Vlakplaas commander at the time also echoed Almond's statement in November 1989....
It was during this time that FW de Klerk appointed Judge Louis Harms to investigate...A wasteful and fruitless judicial cover up commission that started in March 1990. Harms' report in November 1990 said these men were talking rubbish In 1996, the TRC granted all of them amnesty
