A large chunk of our council has now been arrested on bribery charges. I’m ashamed to have ever supported them. What a disgusting breach of public trust.

This prosecutor speaking at the presser used to work for the DOJ in the Republic of Georgia.
It seems there are more coming. When asked if this person who was being solicited met with other council members, the prosecutor says “I can, but I won’t.” He also implies that the political culture here is so corrupt that there’s immense pressure to succumb to survive.
Says that’s why they’re making arrests and prosecuting: to send the message that this is not okay.

Hopefully there will be a transcript or video available. I believe this prosecutor also said he previously worked in Ukraine in addition to Georgia, fighting public corruption. He made comparisons. Really unflattering ones. Our council should be so ashamed.

👆🏻It’s bad. And something to remember/think about: these kinds of deals don’t just go “poof” once both parties have what they want. The person doing the bribes then has leverage over a council member to keep asking for more and more.
And the dynamic then becomes about personal needs vs. doing the actual job of representing the people of the city.
