Last night, I really wanted to make a "joke" about how the way these people "request" that we convert reminds me of the way Microsoft spent 18 months "requesting" I upgrade to Win10. But then I realized that I was actually onto something possibly profound. So, a thread. 1/11.
Remember when Microsoft released Win10? They tried to drive adoption by talking up the cool new features, which didn't work great. It turned out that plenty of people didn't want or need Cortana, or XBox Live integration. But rather than take the L, Microsoft got creative. 2/11.
They bundled Win10 with Win7 service packs and added pop-ups "encouraging" you to "voluntarily" upgrade. These pop-ups grew more intrusive until they were full-screen, couldn't be minimized, had no "cancel" button, and treated clicking the red "X" as consent to the upgrade. 3/11.
Microsoft did all of this because it was REALLY important to them that EVERYONE switch to Win10. So important that things like honesty or respecting customer preference were, by comparison, not merely irrelevant but actively stifling progress. 4/11.
It was so important that Microsoft literally couldn't allow itself to acknowledge the validity of *any* reason not to upgrade. Win10 was clearly superior, and if you wanted to keep Win7, you were stupid or malicious and your opinion didn't count. 5/11.
Similarly, the importance meant that any means of accomplishing the task was acceptable, no matter how deceptive or coercive. Even lying to customers or ignoring their preference and consent was worth it, if it got them using Win10. Do you see where I'm going with this yet? 6/11.
These supersessionists believe that Christianity is Judaism 2.0, and therefore clearly superior in every way. Their worldview literally has no room for good people who willfully choose Judaism, because they can't imagine anyone intentionally choosing the "inferior" product. 7/11.
By their logic, the only valid reason anyone would be Jewish is ignorance. And they can't imagine any reason that a Jew might reject their sales pitch aside from active malice. Which I think might explain the vitriol our rejection always provokes. 8/11.
These people truly believe they're doing us a kindness by saving us from our ignorance so we can voluntarily overcome Judaism, the defect in our souls. It's why they frequently try to *initiate* the conversation cordially, and why they react poorly to our rejection. 9/11.
By rejecting them, we prove we're not "good people *despite* our Jewishness", but rather "bad people *because* of our Jewishness". By being Jewish when we should "know better", we're willfully engaging in sin, and thus not entitled to the facade of kindness or respect. 10/11.
So that's when the vitriol comes out. Holocaust denial, blood libel, Christ-killer accusations. It's all a response to the conviction that *being Jewish* is inherently sinful, and that our resistance to conversion means we're beyond redemption. 11/11.
