"We googled 'most cited papers' and clicked on the 1st link (from Nature, oh the irony). Van Noorden et al. (2014) provide a list of the 100 most-cited papers of all time (though they list 101)"…
Dear Reviewer 3286, we used 1st author because it was the easiest to do in the 5-minutes we expected to dedicate to this study. We didn't normalize the data based on population, but apparently that was already done in the 90s (and guess where it was published?).
