100 years ago on Nov. 17, the last major component of the counter-revolutionary White Guards led by General Pyotr Wrangel left Crimea in steam ships, essentially marking the triumph of the Bolsheviks, three years after their coup, a disaster the world still hasn't recovered from.
The Allies supported the White Guards in #Russia from 1918 primarily as a means of pressuring the Bolsheviks into re-opening the Eastern Front against Germany, meaning the incentive collapsed once the Armistice in the Great War was signed, except with Winston Churchill.
Most of the Allies failed to recognise that the Bolshevik regime was a menace in and of itself, one far worse than the Kaiser, and thus the support for the White Guards was limited and listless. By the end of 1919, the counter-revolutionaries were in disarray.
In the east, the Bolsheviks captured and murdered Admiral Kolchak in February 1920. Shortly after that in the west, General Denikin resigned and left the Ukraine, where Wrangel did what he could in the circumstances but within six months it was over.
Some White Guards did fight on after 1920, but they were the more extreme religious elements and they were isolated in the east: Mikhail Diterikhs proclaimed a sobor in July 1922 that was defeated three months later, and Anatoly Pepelyayev managed to hold out until June 1923.
In exile, the White émigrés were hunted by the Soviet secret police: their organisations infiltrated, their leaders assassinated, many in Paris, and some of them lured back to Russia on promises of continuing the anti-Bolshevik war by cunning provocations like the TRUST operation
In case of interest, prior thread on the Allied intervention in the Russian civil war, the White Guards' defeat, and the continuation of war by other means in exile as the Bolshevik regime stabilised and sent its agents after the White émigrés in Europe.
Baffled that a journalist could write this tweet, read it back, and think, "Yeah, this constitutes evidence for the horrific and logistically implausible accusation of criminality I'm making." Incredibly embarrassing, and much worse in what it says about the NYT editorial process
Had forgotten Kristof was fooled by Somaly Mam, the Cambodian fake "trafficking victim", and insisted even when admitting the deception we not "lose sight of the larger issue" she lied about.
'Tis literally a case of the "feverish denunciations of Israel" Rep Josh Gottheimer spoke of. Amazing Favreau thinks this reflects badly on Gottheimer.
Al-Jazeera style guide:
- ISIS, Al-Qaeda not "terrorists" or even "Islamists"
- Muslim Brotherhood not "an Islamic/Islamist group"
- Armenian massacres not "genocide", but Srebrenica is
- "jihad means an inner spiritual struggle"
- Muslims not "fundamentalist"; Christians can be
Al-Jazeera style guide:
- Never refer to Israel as "the Jewish State"
- "never refer to [Jerusalem] as the capital of Israel"
- When Israelis go to the Temple Mount call it an "incursion": "Don't call it a 'visit'."
- Not allowed to refer to IDF
- Post-2005 Gaza "is occupied"
Al-Jazeera's style guide says #Israel's requests for delays on reporting soldiers' deaths so families can be told should be defied, but #China's belief that Taiwan "is not a country" should be rigorously adhered to and #Iran's Press TV must not be called "State TV".
In a surprise to exactly nobody, the captured HAMAS documents show how closely and directly the terrorists coordinated with Al-Jazeera to decide on the political warfare ludicrously labelled as "news coverage" to be broadcast by the Qatari State channel. terrorism-info.org.il/en/documentary…
"Across all its platforms, Al Jazeera spread the psychological warfare materials produced by the Combat Media Unit of Hamas ... In many cases, Hamas' military wing even used its channels to announce exclusive new content to be broadcast on Al Jazeera"
The most notorious part of Al-Jazeera's collaboration with HAMAS's psychological warfare was broadcasting Israeli hostage statements tortured out of them by HAMAS, calling for Israel to comply with HAMAS's demands, and the sick handover "ceremonies".
This is deeply embarrassing for all concerned - the experts and the journalists breathlessly relaying their claims. The more true it is that "genocide scholars" think they have a case study in Israel's anti-HAMAS war, the more discredit it brings on the field.
Amusing to see those trying to foster the notion of an expert consensus that Israel is committing "genocide" by fighting HAMAS insist the experts interviewed are not activists and that no comparison is being made with the Holocaust. They protest too much.
Every claim of genocide at least implicitly invokes the Holocaust. Apart from the Shoah being the historical context for the codification of genocide, it is the unique, "pure" instance: Jews posed no threat to the German State, and the attempt to annihilate them was total.
This is a completely anodyne statement of compassion and prudence - it is rather well attested that there is a contagious aspect to suicide. But the replies are absolutely unhinged from the "pro-Palestine" set. A truly suicidal movement, in every respect.
If Aaron Bushnell, the US airman who immolated himself, is to be taken seriously ideologically - rather than us mourning the suicide of a disturbed person - the results are not pretty.
He was a straight-out HAMAS supporter, thought Israel was the Nazis of our time
Aaron Bushnell, the US airman who immolated himself, was very clear that he thought HAMAS kidnapping and slaughtering Israelis at the music festival of October 7 was justified. He thought all Israelis were settlers and made his Nazi allusion again, people having fun beside a camp
#Israel's opening presentation before the ICJ show trial was very dignified and soberly done, not just by comparison with the raft of hysterical lies from the ANC's South Africa.
A point #Israel made at the ICJ that it should have made more of before now: "genocide" describes Oct. 7 and HAMAS' public political program. The Genocide Convention mandates action to prevent or to punish. So, why have others not joined the operation to eliminate HAMAS?
If the ANC's South Africa was so concerned about genocidal actors in former Mandate Palestine, it would have arrested HAMAS official Basem Naim in early December. Instead, Naim was feated and presented with a Mandela grandchild, who is an ANC MP, of course apnews.com/article/hamas-…
