2020 feels like an extended Ash Wednesday, a Lent that awaits the Dawn of Easter. I know it will come but at this moment, the darkness is overwhelming.
Yet God is faithful and, 'though he slay me, I will trust him.'

May the approaching season of Advent shape and form our lives by a renewed awareness of what Advent has been designed liturgically to be and do - not a month-long extended Christmas, but an entry into the longing...
...of God's people and creation for the coming of the Son of God to put all to rights and make all things new. In the days ahead we enter into the pain of 'those who sat in darkness' and waited, longing and praying for the fulfillment of the hope of generations.
The 'great light' did appear... and will again.

Come Thou long-expected Jesus...

May God comfort and keep all who mourn tonight and strengthen every fainting heart.

1. May I just share a brief word of encouragement? The Tower of Babel’s damage goes on, causing confusion & disorder even among those who speak the same language. Moreover our world often operates more on deception than on truth. Do we aspire to be truth-tellers?
2. Then let us deal first of all with our own lying hearts. Praying that God would make us truth tellers is a dangerous prayer for liars to offer! It invites the Spirit to search us deeply & purge our hearts of pride & partisanship, and fear & hate.
3. The powers cynically ask, “What is truth?” but Jesus who is Truth incarnate bears witness to reality. Before him, rumor, gossip, conspiracy theory, & falsehood do fail. We can come to clarity & unity - if we are unafraid to embrace the truth.

All praise to God, who reigns above,
the God of all creation,
the God of wonders, pow'r, and love,
the God of our salvation!
With healing balm my soul he fills,
the God who every sorrow stills.
To God all praise and glory!
What God's almighty pow'r hath made
his gracious mercy keepeth;
by morning dawn or evening shade
his watchful eye ne'er sleepeth;
within the kingdom of his might,
lo, all is just and all is right.
To God all praise and glory!
I cried to him in time of need:
Lord God, O hear my calling!
For death he gave me life indeed
and kept my feet from falling.
For this my thanks shall endless be;
O thank him, thank our God, with me.
To God all praise and glory!

I'm fascinated by the hold the American presidency has on the imagination of many Christians. In the past few days several EVs who are Republicans support President Trump have started using exile language as a way to explain their circumstances. This has also been used...
by some EV's who have been non-GOP or opposed to President Trump over the past four years. What both have in common is a definition of promised land based on the Presidency as representative of their political views. Both turn Kingdom into power and access to power into Israel
True exile faith - which ALL Christians should intuitively feel and experience - is known precisely when we reject these categories of kingdom and promise for more authentic biblical norms that regularly position us against the powers, whether on the right or the left.

I've taught for decades the necessity and efficacy of praying for those in authority. I've lived long enough to have spent many years praying for those with whom I have deep disagreements. God never asked me to agree with them; he commands me to pray for them. Moreover...
God promises to take these often weak prayers and answer them in powerfully unexpected ways, most supremely in the open doors for the Gospel he provides for his Church. THIS - and this alone!- is our chief priority. You may think the highest priority is the protection of
... your personal rights or justice in an unjust land (and these matter for you and your neighbor are an image-bearer of God), or perhaps economic systems or military security. Vital as such are in a well-ordered nation, these are not our in priorities in prayer. We pray...

1 Let us love and sing and wonder,
let us praise the Savior's name!
He has hushed the law's loud thunder,
he has quenched Mount Sinai's flame;
he has washed us with his blood,
he has brought us nigh to God.
2 Let us love the Lord who bought us,
pitied us when enemies,
called us by his grace, and taught us,
gave us ears and gave us eyes:
he has washed us with his blood,
he presents our souls to God.
3 Let us sing, though fierce temptation
threaten hard to bear us down!
For the Lord, our strong salvation,
holds in view the conqu'ror's crown;
he who washed us with his blood,
soon will bring us home to God.

1 How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,
is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!
What more can he say than to you he has said,
to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
2 "Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed;
for I am your God, and will still give you aid;
I'll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand,
upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.
3 "When through the deep waters I call you to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
for I will be with you, your troubles to bless,
and sanctify to you your deepest distress.
