6/n I'll start the defense by the very beginning of it (should I ?), and like for many oceanographic studies, it all started seriously with the 1872-1876 Challenger Expedition. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge…#sharehdr
7/n In 1873, going from St Thomas to Bermuda up to Halifax, they collected these amazing deep temperature data: between 100 and 300m depths, the ocean temperature is nearly homogeneous from station 52 to station 25, i.e. over 1000km centered near Bermuda #sharehdr
8/n This is highly remarkable because this ocean layer (highlighted in red) with nearly uniform temperature extends through a particularly large region and thickness, which is totally unusual for the upper surface layer of the ocean ! #sharehdr
9/n To get the scale of this, imagine a water layer with uniform temperature (18C = Brest typical swimming temp), nearly as high as the Eiffel tower (see it on scale in the figure above, to the left) and larger than France (see below)! #sharehdr
10/n Now remember when you swim in the ocean in summer, how fast the temperature can drop from the surface to your feet ... told you, this kind of homogeneous mass, this scale, this close to the surface, is truly remarkable #sharehdr
11/n Let's get back to the coffee machine, or to work, I get lost #sharehdr

12/n Yesterday I shared the very beginning of it, today, let's talk about where it was when I started my research on these as a postdoc at @mit_eaps in 2006 #sharehdr
13/n A lot was still unknown about the Eighteen Degree Water at this time: quantifying the layer and understanding its driving mechanisms were at the heart of the CLIMODE project #sharehdr
14/n Combining a exhaustive set of in situ experiments and numerical simulations was the strategy to tackle these questions in the CLIMODE project #sharehdr
1/n Dear colleagues, on Nov. 27th I will defend what we call in France a "HdR". Wikipedia says it's "a qualification required in order to conduct self-contained university teaching", en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habilitat…#sharehdr
2/n ... adding: "The degree is conferred for a habilitation thesis […], which was reviewed by and successfully defended before an academic committee", en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habilitat…#sharehdr
3/n This "successful" defense has not happened yet, and I'm preparing it right now, full time till Friday. I thought I could try to share with you here, key graphics and figures and thoughts during my coffee breaks ! #sharehdr
