🥳 a chance to promote my dear friend @alexwerntz and our recent paper on how LGBTQ+ and students of color made decisions about applying to and accepting offers from clinical psych PhD programs— check it out here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.100…
Diversity, broadly defined, was important to all students—
but about 1 in 10 applicants said that after interviews, none of the programs felt authentic in their efforts
Interview day is for assessing fit with the program culture— will I thrive here?— this is especially true for minoritized students, and students of color said they were encouraged to ask about diversity efforts during interviews, more so than did white students.
But LGBTQ+ students did not differ from cishet students on whether they received that same advice.
But they WERE more likely to be advised to NOT discuss personal info. We can’t change (and can’t know) what advice applicants are working with when they walk into the interview
But faculty who are interviewing students should proactively bring up discussions about inclusion and safety to lift the burden off students, particularly for those whose marginalized and stigmatized identities are less visible
Finally—and I can’t emphasize this enough— advocate for and secure student funding. Talk to them about money. Figure out their financial needs. Faculty, it’s up to you whether this becomes a scary-feeling conversation.
a PhD is expensive, and its pushing economically disadvantaged students out, leading to further homogenization of the field. Funding incentives (not just stipend, but incentives like diversity fellowships) sways LGBTQ+ and students of colors’ decisions to accept an offer.
Bonus: We cite quite a few excellent resources about student funding, faculty recruitment, and other relevant pieces throughout.
can’t forgot the rest of the team, most of who are not on the twit: Steven Hobaica who is living it up as an intern in Hawaii, @sowenscience at UNC (and on the internship trail now!) and faculty mentors Mark Lumley (a la Wayne State) and Jason Washburn (a la Northwestern)
