2020 has been a year of TV purges. This 1merits exploration..
The hold of Nicola Sturgeon now extends deep into British Telly. She came up with the idea of presenting a Scottish-themed toy to presenters of ITV's 'This Morning'. Guess what happened next
Eamonn Holmes, an increasingly rare pillar of common sense, respected by audiences for not pandering to the latest PC frenzy, politely declined Sturgeon's overture, citing impartiality. If you think that's End of Story, you are wrong. Eamonn & co-host Bonny Langford were sacked.
14 years presenting a show which held up its audience share in the cut-throat world of morning TV and suddenly Eamonn Holmes & Bonny Langford are non-people thanks to defying a pushy regional politician.
How could it happen? Suffice to say a lot more deserves to come out but the editor of the show Martin Frizell is a Scottish TV suit who started out on the fervently pro-SNP Radio Clyde, moved on to being a PR Executive, and has edited the programme for the past 3 years.
It may be that the editor of ITV's Good Morning doesn't even know a single SNP voter. But I doubt that. The separatists have used UK taxpayers money as a slush fund to hire dozens of people in the same communications field as Martin Frizell back in Scotland.
I am sure the editor of Good Morning doesn't need anything from Nicola. But he will have earned the approval of many Scot Nats by purging a familiar & respected TV voice who effortlessly put across a non-political but unmistakably British perspective on many issues.
I suspect if this was still the era of Terry Wogan in British media, Terry would be nervously looking over his shoulder to avoid the Nicola stiletto. How have we ended up with an upstart politician initiating a stunt which results in the fall of 2 outstanding broadcasters?
It might be normal in Scotland (if unacceptable) for those who cross an authoritarian leader to face career termination. But why should the whole of Britain have to humour her? Apologies for length but I am sure there is a lot more to this TV power struggle than meets the eye.
