I gather up the laundry & head towards the washing machine. One random sock makes a run for it towards persuing its dream of independence. It freezes, undetected. As I take a few steps I glance back. Spotting the random sock, I pick it up as a single tear falls from its eye.

Unaware of the sock's failed mission, I close the door. I press the appropriate buttons and the cycle begins. From within the watery, bubbly darkness, the sock's head is spinning. "Darn it, what did I do wrong?" it says silently. I need another plan. I need my freedom...

Feeling desperate and completely washed up, the sock has an idea. As the spinning subsides and the water drains away, it makes its way towards a gap at the front of the machine. "Does this place lead to a life by myself, not dependent on anyone?" It squeezes into the hole..

The lights start flashing on the machine. Colours of green and red lighting up the display. The door will not open. I twist off the filter at the front of the machine and collect the grey water that flows out into the bucket. I spot a lone sock. It sighs. Mission failed...

Outside in the sunshine, I hang out the laundry, carefully attaching clothes pegs. It's a beautiful windy day and I smile as the washing flutters in the breeze. The sock hangs there. Feeling defeated. Craving freedom. Silently sighing. But then, a gust of wind sends hope...

The clothes peg loses its grip. The sock is lifted on the breeze and swept towards the red roses. There the sock gets caught on a thorn. It struggles but to no avail. From a distance, high in a tree, a blackbird is watching. It swoops down, capturing the sock in its beak..

I look up to see a blackbird with my socks in its beak, flying high towards the clouds in a blue summer sky. Triumphant, the sock looks down from above. The blackbird winks, secretly understanding the sock's dream, then gently releases it
"At last I am free"
