+💯@brianstelter for calling out @potus @vp @presssec for not holding press conferences & avoiding questions. Public servants are accountable to the public. Regular press briefings are part of the transparency that arms us with the info essential to self-governance in a democracy
Today, @JimVandeHei told @ReliableSources about how @axios governs the speech of its staff on social media & TV: they can’t “pop off” on Twitter, or tell @BrianStelter about their views.

Was this the apotheosis of the “view from nowhere” on a Sunday morning show, @jayrosen_nyu?
The behavior of members of media is irrelevant to the obligation of the officials.
In a healthy democracy, press conferences are not a privilege or treat to be doled out at the discretion of those in power to favored reporters.
This isn't like state TV in an authoritarian regime.
Regular press conferences show a commitment to the transparency & accountability the American people expect of a @POTUS, Speaker, @SenateMajLdr, @Cabinet members, @TheJointStaff – or governors, mayors, police chiefs, & other state & local officials who all serve & protect us.
The way presidential candidates treat the press in a campaign suggests how they will govern.
The way a PEOTUS or @POTUS does so after election & in office shows us.
Trump didn't hold a presser for WEEKS after election: Never disclosed or divested, either.
While it is understandable why a President full of narcissistic rage that is lying about fraud & grasping at any legal or extra-legal strategy to hold power in a soft coup would not hold a presser, it is notable that a @POTUS has not done so after losing.

@POTUS PEOTUS @JoeBiden & VPEOTUS @KamalaHarris need to set a stark contrast between @Transition46 & @Transition2017 on transparency & accountability now, & to the Trump @WhiteHouse in 59 days, from ethics to accessibility. First principles: sunlightfoundation.com/2016/08/30/pri…

SCOTUS had upheld the constitutionality of state & local health authorities enforcing codes in a pandemic, from masks to closing churches or bars: americanbar.org/news/abanews/p… Once an emergency is declared, they have power to restrict liberties & enforce mandates.

This is subversion: ImageImage
Typhoid Mary showed a limit for individual liberty.
In 2020, SCOTUS upheld state restrictions: “Our Constitution principally entrusts “[t]he safety & the health of the people’ to the politically accountable officials of the States ‘to guard & protect.’” supremecourt.gov/opinions/19pdf… Image
“While protestors in 1918 fought against the hated mask, their act of gathering, which was at the time entirely legal, was helping to spread the disease." time.com/5830265/1918-f…
The leaders who do not learn from American history doom their constituents to repeat it.

Congress appropriated funds for @Transition46 @GSAEmily refuses to release. @SpeakerPelosi & @RepMaloney should subpoena her & @FEC @EACgov commissioners to testify Monday as to the “apparent” winner.
No President-Elect should be crowdfunding a transition.
The 116th Congress tolerated a President:
1) taking emoluments in violation of the anti-corruption clause of the Constitution
2) obstructing justice
3) interfering with CDC in a pandemic
4) lying about public health, national security, & now election integrity

Historic failures.
There is ample precedent: Articles of impeachment for Nixon.
House should have investigated Trump’s unprecedented corruption, created a public record through inquiries for each count, referred crimes to DoJ, & sent on to the Senate for a trial.
Attacking democracy is impeachable.

Dear @senatemajldr @ChuckGrassley @SenatorRomney @SenJohnThune @RepLizCheney @GOPLeader @SpeakerRyan @SpeakerBoehner @GovLarryHogan @MassGovernor, VP Cheney, & President Bush: was the 2020 election a “hoax” with widespread fraud, or the “most secure election ever,” per @CISAgov? ImageImageImage
All 50 of the Republicans @Reuters interviewed said the election was rigged or illegitimate. reuters.com/article/us-usa…
20 said they’d accept Biden as POTUS.
Trump’s Big Lie worked, after 5 years of delegitimizing government, media, & any official or politician who contradicted him. ImageImageImageImage
“The truth is that even if Trump’s would-be coup looks like a con, even if it seems to be a clown show that’s surely doomed to fail, it must still be taken seriously as long as it is happening”-@sbg1 newyorker.com/news/letter-fr…
Why?
79% of Republicans believe his Big Lie about fraud ImageImage

NEW: Secretary of State refuses to accept the will of the American people after a free & fair election & cooperate with a peaceful transition of power, eviscerating the @StateDept’s moral authority to engage in diplomacy & @USAID’s @StateDRL mission to protect & advance democracy
The record of @SecPompeo was mixed & not distinguished. Today’s comments, however, degrade his office & merit resignation in disgrace.

A healthy Congress would censure him, at minimum.
Don’t worry, says the politics editor: he’s just joking.

He can’t possibly believe this administration was ordained by God, or the Rapture is coming, or evolution isn’t real, or Democrats aren’t legitimate or that corruption is OK, or lawsuits will swing the election in SCOTUS.

🚨⚖️ State officials across the US say the 2020 election went well, with only minor issues that typical every year — much less Trump’s lies about widespread voter fraud — but @AP reports AG Barr just authorized a probe of “apparently credible” allegations: apnews.com/article/electi…
Barr’s memo prompted @TheJusticeDept official who oversees investigations of voter fraud to resign in hours nytimes.com/2020/11/09/us/…
Barr’s authorization ignored policies intended to keep @TheJusticeDept from affecting the outcome of an election.

An abuse of power to keep power.

This was the speech from a POTUS that Americans have been waiting to hear since this deadly virus reached our shores: honest about the danger, rational about required responses, clear about the needs, focused on a shared goal, & grounded in shared values. pscp.tv/JoeBiden/1vAxR…
POTUS-Elect @JoeBiden:

The single most effective thing we can do to stop the spread of COVID: wear a mask.

A mask remains the most potent weapon against the virus."

We can save tens of thousands of
lives if we just wear a mask.

Not Democrat or Republican lives American lives.
Biden:
It doesn't matter who you voted for. We are Americans and our country is under threat.
We're now called to do the same thing that generations have done when faced with a crisis throughout our history: rise above our differences to defend the strength & vitality of nations
