For me, Thanksgiving is time to start making Christmas presents. This year I am thinking of making homemade Hot Chocolate mix.
Sift together 2 cups of powdered milk, 1 cup of powdered sugar, & 2 cups of cocoa powder. I use Ghiradelli's Sweet Ground Dark Chocolate & Cocoa Powder
I am enjoying a cup right this minute. Yum!
Other things I have made. Mom's shelf-stable pie crust mix. 5 lbs flour (minus 2 cups), 1 lg can of Crisco, 2 TBSP salt. Mix, store in a sealed container. Just add water when you want to make the pie. Lasts without refrigeration for at least 1 year.
And of course, vanilla sugar. Get a pretty jar. Fill with sugar. Add a vanilla bean. Perfect for tea and baking. The recipient can add more sugar again and again until the vanilla bean is completely dried out. Do it now so it's rich and redolent with vanilla by Christmas.
I have made both lemon sugar and lime sugar. Also great, especially in an iced tea. I used Martha's recipe.
And lastly, lavender sugar. A great choice for tea and for making shortbread cookies. Take 1-2 tbsp of dried lavender & pulse with sugar in a blender. You need just enough sugar to give something for the lavender to blend into. Add 2 cups sugar and stir in.
Ginger sugar, 1 tsp grated ginger per cup of sugar.
Pictures from past Christmas gift projects
I want to add that these are relatively inexpensive gifts and fancy jars to put them in can be found at Goodwill or other thrift stores or garage sales post-pandemic. You also don't have to be a great cook to make them. Sticking a bean in sugar is not Food Network cooking.

Political stupidity is not limited to white people. However, Black people choosing Trumpism and Republicans out of disappointment with Democrats failing to do enough to help should recognize why their grandparents and great-grandparents moved to the Dems thedailybeast.com/more-black-men…
During the Depression, the Republicans proved they were totally serious about doing nothing to help the commonweal. The Democrats were still the party of the Klan, but they also were the party of government intervention, in the belief that they party could promote economic health
For Black people to advance, the government had to push some civil rights policies. While the Democrats (in general) were anti-Black, they believed in government promoting public policy for the general welfare and Republicans were ideologically opposed to any intervention.
New Thought has invaded and contaminated far too much of our culture. I have tweeted about it before and it annoys me no end to see it invade politics.
I mean, the entire argument for a Bernie Revolution is speaking it into existence, isn't it? So much so, he didn't even see the need to elect a Democratic House and Senate when he ran in 2016. He would just say Single Payer and it would happen.
Now it seems that there is the "Do Something" caucus who seem to want politicians to say the magic words that will make Donald Trump go away. They think we don't have COVID relief because Democrats don't demand it the right way.
I am accustomed to being the only white person in the room. I don't get nervous about it. I don't recall ever seeing another white person at my laundromat in 10 years. But today was different, maybe because the other customers were young, Black men. Well, also one old Black man.
There had been a couple Black women, but they left to do errands while their dryers ran. So, the guys all congregated on the other side and were mostly having fun, except every time they got a little loud or laughed, they would hush each other.
Obviously, Karen has been enough of a problem that I made them uneasy about being themselves. The women came back to get their stuff, and alas, the whites had not dried. So they put some more money in and she folded up the rest of her stuff and heading out the door..
I am going to do something unusual and amplify some Republicans who earned my respect.
I will start with Oregon's Secretary of State Bev Clarno. She was appointed by Gov. Brown (D) when prior SOS (R) died. She ran our election & defended Vote-By-Mail.
True, all she did is what any professional electoral manager would do, but that is extraordinary in these times.
Now to the SoS in Georgia. Brad Raffensperger is probably incinerating his political career to defend Georgia voters and protect their votes.
He now has both Republican senatorial candidates calling for his resignation. He's getting death threats, and he has pissed of Trump and the Chair of the Judiciary Committee Lindsey Graham.
Andy Ngo routinely edits his videos to provide a narrative of white victimization by Black people. He is an anti-Black racist and promotes racist hate and white supremacy. A SE Asian man promoting white supremacy? Does that seem odd? Not really.
Racism in the United States is built on a racial hierarchy with Black people permanently at the bottom. Asians, particularly northern Asians from China and Japan, were excluded from Jim Crow in many states, for example, and were able to enter and use white public accommodations.
Add the model minority and other myths that are used to divide minoritized people in America from each other and some Asians identity more with whiteness than with being a minoritized person. Nikki Haley identifies as white, for example. Many Indians focus on their Aryan roots
I really am baffled by this. If someone absolutely agrees that free college and debt forgiveness will harden racial disparities, but still thinks they should be prioritized over policies that would address racial disparities basically because they are more salient.
The idea that equalizing public education is some pipe dream perfect that is the enemy of the good baffles me. The thing is, while public education is dependent on zip code and family wealth, making college free helps white people disproportionately. Address the education gap 1st
School loan lending is predatory and I would totally support the government taking over school loans and having people pay it back at 1% interest or some such. Simply forgiving those loans when so many people, and again, disproportionately Black people, Latino & Indigenous people
