Journeys of a non-traditional FSO
#EnlistedtoDiplomat:

Classmate: Wow you went to four undergrad institutions but @Georgetown still gave you a degree? 🚩

Me: Yes?

C: Oh most schools wouldn’t allow that, if you earned a lot of credits elsewhere...
1/6
Me: I had an AA and then just a few other credits from taking night classes while active duty so it wasn’t a lot.

C: Oh so like online classes? 🚩

M: No they were in-person satellite courses. I took some while deployed.

C: And you still got a Georgetown degree? 🚩
2/6
M: Yes. I had to do three full years at Georgetown to get the degree. I had just enough GI bill to make it work.

C: Wow, no debt. The military is another world 🚩

🙃I’ve never received so many backhanded compliments in under sixty seconds🙃

1️⃣I got my AA through DLI, took night classes using TA, and then Gtown on the GI Bill. It took me 8 years to get my Bachelors

2️⃣The GI Bill is capped and does not fully cover undergrad at GTown

3️⃣Massive student debt isnt a badge of honor it’s a policy failure

4/6
4️⃣There’s nothing wrong w/ Satellite (or online) courses

5️⃣Debate the military (industrial complex? Glorification of war?) or the 💵 of higher ed with me all you want but don’t disguise the chip on your shoulder as intellectual critique

5/6
Anyways.

Here’s this proud #GIBillgrad giving one of the student convocation speeches for @georgetownsfs Class of 2018.

My step-cousin had a wedding three weeks ago. They’re anti-maskers. My granny went even though she cares for my grandpa at home who has dementia.

Everyone got sick afterwards, he tested positive on Friday, and he passed away this morning. Image
As a member of @TheIronworkers Local 29 we used to say my grandpa built Portland.

We know for sure he helped with the convention center and I think of him whenever I see it, but my dad says you can’t throw a rock in Portland and not hit something my grandpa helped build. Image
He’s had dementia, a few strokes, and heart surgery, but what finally did him in was a combo of COVID and the selfishness of some I used to call family.

This week felt like a long panic attack but with anger. We knew we’d lose him, but him being taken feels so much worse.
