TODAY’S THE DAY! Migrant students are delivering 16K petitions to Immigration Minister office at 12 today in TO to stop mass deportations. Tune into our Facebook live at 12 PM (@MigrantWorkersAlliance)!
Wherever you are, take action, call the Minister NOW! #StatusForAll
Last week, we postered Minister Mendicino’s office calling on him to #RenewPGWP to stop mass deportations. Today, let’s make sure our message is unavoidable with 16K petitions strong.
See you at 12 PM at his office (511 Lawrence Ave W)!
We’re setting up in front of @marcomendicino’s office right now & decorating his shiny windows with our call to action: don’t punish migrant workers for the pandemic! Make work permits renewable — a quick, pragmatic, bureaucratic fix that would immediately stop deportations.
“What is the reason of this hypocritical attitude towards migrants? Why are their public statements different from their policies?” — Shiva, a migrant student workers whose work permit has expired speaks on the unfairness of @marcomendicino’s immigration policies.
“Here comes the hidden devil of discrimination, long work hrs & low pay, without access to basic rights and protections, which takes a toll on us leading us into mental stress & ill-health.” - Raja, a migrant student worker who faces deportation if his work permit isn’t renewed.

Thousands were given time-restricted work permits upon graduation, but must complete high-waged jobs to qualify for PR. With COVID-19 job losses worsening again in the 2nd wave, most don't have access to these jobs and yet their permits remain non-renewable and are set to expire.
COVID-19 has changed everything, but unfair immigration rules stay the same. Current & former international students are running out of time. Thousands face deportation after December 31st if they don’t fulfill requirements for permanent residency that are out of their control.
