How ignorant of history and politics do you have to be to think that Roosevelt 100 years ago would have used the the contemporary American terms "conservative" and "liberal" in this way?

Roosevelt saw himself as a Liberal and a Progressive. In 1911 he wrote:
"Fundamentally it is the radical liberal with whom I sympathize. ...when he adds sanity in moderation to courage and enthusiasm for high ideals"

Later he founded the Bull-Moose Party, aka the Progressive Party, because he felt the GOP had become too conservative.
"Liberal" in the early 20th century was used how it's used in Europe nowadays, in favour of economic and political freedom combined with a commitment to institutional reform and equality.
