The industrialization of the Columbia Basin’s rivers has caused the system to lose its natural balance.

Now, governors of Oregon, Washington, Idaho & Montana have agreed to work together to restore Columbia River Basin salmon & steelhead.

Here's why it's time to #FreeTheSnake:
🌊 Healthy rivers support human health.

The cultural impacts for the Nimiipuu people of the lower Snake River dams are incalculable. Now facing COVID-19, the Nimiipuu have higher health risks because they no longer have adequate access to ancestral foods. Salmon fight to pass a dam via NOAA Fisheries West CoastA dam alters the Snake river and blocks passage for salmon v
⌛️ The decline of salmon is not just hurting human health, it's pushing orcas toward extinction.

Due to a loss of their primary food supply, ~70% of orca pregnancies end in miscarriage today. Without salmon, their families and future are at risk too. on.nrdc.org/36vmPnF
🔥 We're running out of time.

As global temperatures rise, the water behind dams is increasingly becoming lethal to the fish fighting to migrate past them. on.nrdc.org/2UjFXiK
‼️ The federal government concluded that removing four dams on the lower Snake River would have the greatest benefit for salmon survival, but the Army Corps still refused to do so and offered an inadequate solution in its place. on.nrdc.org/3ddDgaR
With 13 Columbia Basin salmon populations nearing extinction, one of the most essential elements of our ecosystem could disappear forever.

Collaboration is needed NOW to advance solutions that restore abundant salmon runs to the Columbia River Basin. on.nrdc.org/3lFlqkR

The wood pellet industry is fueling environmental racism in the U.S. South. on.nrdc.org/33biepy

THREAD 1/8
Wood pellets, a purportedly renewable alternative to coal, are being manufactured across the U.S. South in mills that are emitting thousands of tons of particulate matter, carbon monoxide, smog, & volatile organic compounds per year. 2/8 on.nrdc.org/3l2MSa
The location of these mills is no coincidence. A 2018 study found that all wood pellet mills in North Carolina and South Carolina are located in low income communities of color typically overburdened by toxic industry. 3/8 on.nrdc.org/39i4fm1

🆘 WE NEED YOUR VOICES. 🆘 The Trump admin is once again trying to give handouts to oil and gas companies!

There are just 2 days left to make your voice on opposing these ESA rollbacks. #StopExtinction (1/6)

This proposal would limit what counts as a wildlife habitat, including habitats historically used by a species, as well as habitats that will be important as species migrate in response to climate change. ⬇️ (2/6)
Instead of focusing on public health, economic injustice, and the climate crisis the Trump admin is giving incentives to fossil fuel industries that are wreaking havoc on our planet and destroying Indigenous lands and ecosystems wildlife have relied upon for centuries. 🏞️ (3/6)

THREAD: Deep within Arizona’s Sonoran Desert and less than 100 yards from the international border, Quitobaquito Springs has been part of the Native O’odham People’s ancestral lands and a sacred ceremonial site for thousands of years. 🌿
It is also the only U.S. home of the endangered Sonoyta mud turtle and the Quitobaquito pup fish.

⚠️Today, Quitobaquito Springs is at risk of being destroyed. ⚠️
“The land is being ripped open to start building this border wall,” says @seukteomaaa, a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation who has spent years resisting border wall construction on Indigenous homelands. “Plants are being ripped from the ground. Animals are being endangered.”

BREAKING: Today, @NRDC and a coalition of environmental justice, climate justice, and public interest advocacy groups petitioned the @EPA to issue an emergency rule to protect public health during COVID-19 pandemic.

THREAD ->
@EPA Last week, @EPA announced a non-enforcement policy that encourages industries to stop monitoring and reporting pollution in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a dangerous mistake. on.nrdc.org/2QRUhxz
@EPA In its non-enforcement directive, EPA asks—but does not require—companies to inform the agency if they stop monitoring pollution for COVID-19-related reasons.
