Whether it's a small gathering or a rowdy Zoom call, we hope you're planning to celebrate Thanksgiving safely and responsibly!
We know it can be awkward to talk to your family about gun reform, so we put together an all-new Zoom Edition of our Thanksgiving Survival Guide!
2020 has seen an explosion in new gun owners, and some of your family members may be thinking about buying their first gun.
But there are dangers associated with gun ownership that they just may not have considered, and raising your concerns may affect their decision.
Approach the conversation in a measured way. Try to find common ground and invoke a personal narrative. Your loved one will probably say something you disagree with, but don’t interrupt or tell them they’re wrong; your goal is to understand what they think, not change it.
It's important that you listen and reflect on what your loved ones say.
Your overall message should be less “don’t purchase a gun,” and more “maybe you’ll find this information helpful when deciding whether or not to purchase a gun. I know I did.”
Each of us have a part to play when it comes to reducing gun violence. These one-on-one conversations are an important way we can change the culture around guns in America.
Thanks for doing your part. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

During the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve seen a shocking surge in the number of gun sales. So far in 2020, the FBI has recorded over 16.6 MILLION firearm-related background checks, compared to just 9.6 million in the same period last year.
THAT’S A 73% INCREASE.
We also know that gun sales tend to rise over the holiday season. Roughly 30% of annual firearm sales occur during the holiday shopping season between October and December.
That’s why we're calling on large retailers to take action and help protect our communities.
The holiday season isn’t just big for the gun business - it means an increase in death and injuries, too.
The rate of unintentional shootings spikes by about 50% during the holiday season.

1/ Trump has no clue about *causes* of gun violence in our cities or how to *build safe & just communities*
0.5% of a city’s population is responsible for 60-70% of shootings
This THREAD explains how we can reduce deaths by INVESTING IN COMMUNITIES & IMPLEMENTING POLICY CHANGE
2/ We *must* invest in communities & community-based violence intervention programs that have proven to reduce gun violence without contributing to over incarceration and over-policing. (HT to @GiffordsCourage for this excellent report: lawcenter.giffords.org/wp-content/upl…)
3/ Gun violence intervention programs assemble community members, faith leaders, social service providers, researchers, and law enforcement officials to form a partnership. This partnership identifies individuals most at risk for committing or becoming victims of gun violence.
First National Bank of Omaha, who issues the NRA's branded Visa card, isn't renewing their contract with the gun lobbyists. But they aren't @NRA's only partners. Here three quick ways to undermine those corporate relationships:

Second, call on the NRA’s insurance partners, @Lockton and @Chubb, to cut ties with the gun lobby and to stop selling their potentially deadly murder insurance: stopmurderinsurance.org
