@stirling_j @PsychScientists First, let's acknowledge the Hegelian nature of the divide. Its not exactly ecoD v Cog. There's a universal/particular thing here. It's ecoD vs cog VS ecoD +cog.
@stirling_j @PsychScientists I think Andrew makes a very fair point that many practitioners don't understand how deep the divide goes. They are radically different views on how organisms perceive and learn all the way down to ontology. Is this dogmatic?
@stirling_j @PsychScientists Cog side has something that is either a strength or weakness depending on where you're positioned. It will always reach phenomenon first because mental explanations can really only be refuted at a fundamental/ontological level.
@stirling_j @PsychScientists EcoD has thus far explained SOME phenomena in a way that puts cog sci to shame. You can't really compare the accomplishment of eco expns of outfielder prob (and any of Andrew's stuff) to mental expns. In eco territory it's very decisive.
@stirling_j @PsychScientists The debate, for me, is how confidently we should extend the success in these territories into areas eco hasn't gotten to. Cog will say sure you can have those areas but out here in representationhungryland you still need us
@stirling_j @PsychScientists My qualm with *some* in ecoD is they stay in territory ecoD has an easier time explaining and minimise or outright reject things it strugggles with. They'll just say visualisation or mental prep. Isn't real rather than just disagreeing with the cog expln of it
@stirling_j @PsychScientists It's difficult because the debate is fierce and it takes a lot of guts to say "we can't explain that *yet*" when the other side gets their explanations for free (if you buy in at ontological level)
@stirling_j @PsychScientists But i also understand the frustration of experienced practitioners who are like "I've seen this work for years and if you can't explain it yet that's your problem."
@stirling_j @PsychScientists I think it becomes dogmatic when eco coaches comment on every video saying it's not representative etc. I kicked a ball against a wall for HOURS at a time as a kid and wouldn't change that. I still take the ball to the park alone. I don't read eco as saying "never do these things
@stirling_j @PsychScientists EcoD just doesn't like the way cog often supports these types of activities. "training programs" etc. Some practices are pure gimmicks and probably irredeemable but we have to remember a sport is partially constituted by all efforts to prepare for it
