Something very significant and very concerning happened over the weekend which we think encapsulates the real dangers now faced by our democracy and the rule of law.
Embedded in the first version of the ‘Call to action’ was a link to a series of tweets by David Paisley which accused Joanna Cherry of ‘funding a hate group’.

Her crime? Donating to the crowdfunder of @SVPhillimore who is a member of this group.
Both @SVPhillimore and Joanna Cherry, unsurprisingly, complained about this. A combination of concise emails and Ms Cherry’s access to good libel lawyers resulted in a surprisingly swift climb down.

But some necessary questions.
Very concerningly one MP claimed his name had been added to the letter ‘without his knowledge’.

Also the organisation behind this letter appears to be run by a 16 year old trans child who popped up to talk to @SVPhillimore
An account claiming to be Dylan’s father shortly appeared to defend the rather odd actions of this child. This account of Gordon Struth appears to be someone who works for the Scottish Parliament.
So. There we have it. A number of Scottish MPs were prepared to put their name to a ‘Call for Action’ which defamed an SNP politician and encouraged an English woman to be targeted. The organisation behind this appears to be run by a child with the connivance of a parent.
This is the state of our current political debate.

This is how elected politicians seek to deal with matters of importance and significance.

With dirty little games, orchestrated by a child.

Welcome to 2020.
And this really matters. Not just because it makes a mockery of any healthy democratic process, but because it puts women in real fear of being targeted for abuse.
We think its's safe to say, things look pretty bad in Scotland.

Very interesting look at how the police collect and analyse ‘hate’ on Twitter - thanks @zeno001
We can see the challenges inherent in deciding what is ‘hateful’.
And how we can be ‘mapped’.

Interesting example of the current problem.

"The Adver has obtained figures through a Freedom of Information request revealing an increase of 1,000 per cent in offences reported to the police from one in 2015 to 11 in 2019 in Swindon."

a representative of Pride says

“The rise just shows the consequences of a society where transphobia is everywhere and must be challenged each and every time."

Remember one of those 11 is @SVPhillimore
And hopefully she is soon going to court to challenge her inclusion on this data base as false, unreasonable and hence unlawful.

So hopefully that terrible statistic will fall shortly!

More appalling news from Nice.

"Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi said that three people were confirmed dead, and that the attacker repeatedly shouted “Allahu Akbhar,” or “God is greatest” in Arabic."

And now we wonder. What are we allowed to say about this?

Is this a hate crime or hate incident?

Are we allowed to discuss the links between terrorism and fundamentalist Islam? Are we allowed to be critical of the Israeli state? Or because this will risk offending some, all discussion is forbidden, even in our own homes?

Why the dogged insistence from the police in focusing on hate ‘crimes’? Do they really mean hate ‘incidents’ - which can simply be recorded without any further action and zero investigation?

While victims of serious crime know they have no redress. Image
The consequences for a society where people lose confidence in the police are obvious and serious. ImageImage

In a pub there would presumably be other witnesses. How do you propose evidence is gathered against people in their own homes? You are either proposing to encourage people to inform on their family/friends or authorising covert surveillance.

Which?
Next question. Define 'stirring up hatred against Jews' please. What if a guest at a dinner party expressed robust condemnation of the actions of the Israeli State? Does this count? If not - why not?
You want the law extended to cover 'hatred' against transgender people. Do you think @SVPhillimore expresses sufficient 'hatred' here to earn a charge? Many would say she does by simple utterance of the definition of 'woman'.

If not. Why not?

The fundamental problem with the Hate Crimes Guidance is the very wide and woolly definition of ‘hate’.

It includes ‘resentment’ and ‘unfriendliness’.

These emotions are normal. They don’t escalate into crime. They are nothing to do with the police.
We will continue to express our contempt for those individuals and organisations who deny science, reality and the law.

Record us on whatever data base you wish.
