Three astonishing admissions yesterday by head of @AFTunion, Randi Weingarten, who for past 8 months has pushed harder than anyone for remote learning:

#1: "Remote education for most kids does not work"

Experts (and kids) said this back in April

/1

#2: Hybrid learning is a failed model for kids, and is untenable for teachers

This also has also been known for many months

/2

#3 Safe for kids to return

Yet untrue framing: 1-Safeguards exceeding those in Europe were already advised by CDC, state DOHs. 2-School mass testing has not been in place in most of US or Europe, yet school transmission has been below community rates

/3

The interesting question is:

Why the acknowledgement of this now?

22 European countries reopened schools in the spring and twice––1 month, and 2 months later––said doing so didn't contribute to national infection rates

@JAMA_current hosted a debate on the Great Barrington Declaration between @mlipsitch and Jay Bhattacharya.

There was one thing both guests and the host agreed upon:

Keep Schools Open

MAJOR THREAD: This Israel article is going to alter the debate about schools. It has a lot of useful information, but its framing, and its title (which is the only thing many will read) distorts reality
FIRST: Israel opened nearly EVERYTHING around the same time. Singling schools out is like seeing a packed highway and pointing to one car and saying "This traffic is all their fault!"
SECOND: This misleading framing of singling out schools has become a bizarre and troubling trend of groupthink, by media and some scientists
