[Thread] People are complaining about those of us calling to #CancelStudentDebt because they had to pay their students loans off.
First of all, I didn’t ask for your financial history and I’ll thank you stay out of mine.
Second, the plans I’ve read don’t involve money coming out of everybody’s pocket but from tax on certain financial institution transactions. Except for possibly affecting the measurement of the happiness of the wealthy, there is not an issue.
Third, the same people complaining people who accrue debt should pay it ought to take a look at the people whose boots they willingly lick by perpetuating this should look at the $3.1 billion added to the deficit in the last year.
Fourth, tuition has increased over and above the rate of inflation while people still battle for a $15 federal minimum wage (which should be at least $20 to account for inflation).
Fifth, those of us in the “middle class” would inject an inordinate amount of money into the economy if we had it to spend. That spending is eliminated or severely cut when you owe over $250k (and still going).
Sixth, the people most affected by the predatory education loan were mostly parents during a time when a college education guaranteed a higher salary and costs were in step with wages and inflation.
Seven, if you even mention going into the military to pay for college just walk away now. Don’t comment. There are people who are, for one reason, unwilling or unable to go into military service. It’s both ableist and borderline nationalistic.
Eight, lower interest rates are not a solution. They’re not even a stop gap when I’m paying on loans broken into smaller loans all accruing interest.
In short, My generation was sold a false dream of a better life if we got a college degree and we saw our parents, some of which who didn’t attend struggle. We don’t want a handout, we want what we were promised. #CancelStudentDebt
