- age - purely as a marker of organ reserve
- illness trajectory prior to ICU
- pre existing mental & physical health
- duration of delirium related to long term cognition outcome
There is good evidence in the literature for “dose-response” relationships between severity of illness and post-illness function, ie. ICU have worse outcome than hospitalised patients.
The level of dysfunction was also worse than patients expected. So important in consent.
Interestingly, in traumatic brain injury, functional recovery can still be seen up to 2 years post injury.
Health related quality of life measures can also reflect good adaption to disability. So @chodgsonANZICRC highlights the importance of measuring both.
