If you think a discussion of manifest grave sin of public figures only applies to your “political enemies” then you are missing the fact that the demands of the faith apply regardless of political affiliation. Don’t let your politics become your idol. 1/
In our culture where marriage and abortion are at odds with our faith, and we are discussing scandal, we shouldn’t downplay either matter. The politicizing of canon 915 as a cudgel to be employed & discussed *only* in the case of “political enemies” harms the faithful. 2/
It is shameful that we don’t even consider not only Melania’s scandalous marriage but also the fact the Pence is the 2nd Catholic VP in the history of the U.S. & he has rejected the faith! We should be concerned 4 Biden, Pence, & Melania instead of settling 4 temporal pwr. 3/
It is confusing to the faithful to hear priests declare members of a political party cannot be Catholic & need confession while we know Baptism leaves an indelible mark on the soul & your political affiliation does not have the power to undo that & frankly neither do your sins.4/
They make being in a political party more potent than Baptism and that is a lie! I blame that diabolical confusion on the seduction of the enemy & our desire to win rather than serve the Lord in even the most difficult of circumstances. 5/
If we are to evangelize & win souls 4 Christ, let us not empty the sacraments of their power by saying u can unCatholic urself thru political affiliation. This is part of why we missed the opportnty to see Melania & Pence’s situations as areas 4 evangelization & accompaniment. 6/
At the same time, it is also why we miss Biden’s situation also as an opportunity for evangelization and accompaniment. Too many want excoriation & perhaps excommunication for Biden, & nothing for Melania & Pence. I want all of them in the Church! 7/
But wanting them all in the Church means seeing them as souls and not as means to score political points & win over our “political enemies”. It means seeing the scandal ea of these public Catholics present & addressing them in a way that is instructive to us all. 8/
We’ve been blinded by politics instead of illuminated by the Gospel. We cannot b effective witnesses 2 the culture abt marriage when a very public ex of a Catholic in a 3rd marriage isn’t even addressed! Are we so conditioned by the culture that we didn’t even see the mess? 9/

The Black Woman Who Biked Across the US Alone During the 1930s Jim Crow Era was named #BessieStringfield and she was a #BlackCatholic. #TheMotorcycleQueenofMiami vice.com/en/article/qvx…
Born in 1911, Stringfield got her first motorcycle, a 1928 Indian Scout, while she was still in her teens and taught herself how to ride it. vice.com/en/article/qvx…
At the age of 19, young Stringfield flipped a penny onto a map of the US then ventured out on her bike alone. Interstate highways didn’t yet exist at the time, but the rough, unpaved roads didn’t deter her. bit.ly/36McNji

“His parents were devout Catholics who said grace before and after meals, and led the children in a family rosary each day. Thompson discerned a calling to the priesthood, and while his white priest was supportive, his own diocese of Lafayette was not.“ commonwealmagazine.org/sign-contradic…
“He graduated from seminary in 1957, but his bishop would not accept him as a priest. Bishop Charles Greco of the neighboring diocese of Alexandria did accept him, and he became the first black priest to be ordained there.”
“While Thompson was grateful to Bp Greco for being the only Southern bishop willing to ordain him, the 2 frequently quarrelled, particularly about the treatment of black Catholics in the diocese. In 1963, Thompson gave an extended interview.....that did not sit well with the Bp.”
