Thread 🧵

Big Tech has been front and centre in the global response to COVID19. But are tech solutions really the best solutions during a crisis?

Find out more with @hey_alirae in episode 3 of #AllHailTheLockdown |
In episode 3 @hey_alirae looks at:

- Technological solutionism
- Contact tracing
- Privacy vs Public Health
- Tech surveillance in Israel
- Big Tech’s bluetooth ‘solution’

We discuss all this with @marwasf @seanmmcdonald, @evgenymorozov & @SharonAWeiss.

Tech innovations have been vital in grappling with the COVID-19 crisis. But @evgenymorozov cautions against the pitfalls of ‘technological solutionism’ where technology is seen as superhero and saviour, while other solutions aren't considered enough.

Contact tracing is a method of disease control that’s been in use for decades. How has digital technology changed the process? @seanmmcdonald explains.

More than 150 contact tracing apps have been developed around the world to track the spread of COVID-19. But the loosening of privacy requirements under the guise of protecting people’s health is a false dichotomy, says @marwasf.

In Israel, contact tracing isn’t handled solely by the Ministry of Health or a crisis committee. The government has got the Shin Bet (Israel’s internal security agency), involved in tracking people’s movements.

COVID-19 has provided a huge business boost for the tech industry. But it comes with hidden costs says @evegnymorozov and @seanmmcdonald.
