In courts across country, it's business-as-usual as COVID rages. Prosecutors demand jail. Judges cage. Howard University Law Students have been court watching in P.G. County, MD. A brave student collected her thoughts. "Like an assembly line. Minutes is all it takes." Read more:
"I open up Zoom and my court watch of the bond hearing in Prince George’s County, Maryland begins. There are four screens. Two of them show a lawyer in suit and tie. One shows a judge in a robe. The last: A person in an orange jumpsuit, their hands cuffed behind their back."
"Nine times out of ten this person cuffed is a Black man."
"Judges go through each bond decisions-whether they'll force a person to risk their life in an overpopulated jail during a pandemic, caged for months waiting for their trial date to be set-like an assembly line. Minutes is all it takes for judges to determine their fates."
"I’ve witnessed judges ignore the people they are about to jail who say they cannot hear what is happening in their hearings, while making technical adjustments for prosecutors when they make the same complaint."
"I’ve witnessed judges fail to have a translator communicate with a non-English speaking person."
"I’ve witnessed judges chastise attorneys who present extended arguments on behalf of their clients. 'How much longer are you going to be?'"
"I’ve witnessed judges make jokes at the expense of the men and women who stand before them."
"I’ve witnessed judges yelling and berating people experiencing clear signs of mental health illnesses for not responding to their questions."
"Meanwhile, while the State's Attorney, Aisha Braveboy (@SABraveboy), has taken the public stance that she is against cash bond (one of her prosecutors even referred to herself as “No Bond Nancy”), I hardly see her prosecutors objecting to putting defendants in jail pre-trial."
"Meanwhile, the jail population continues to increase & COVID threatens lives. While millions of us have been protesting against racial inequality and mass incarceration, court continues to perpetuate these structural forms of oppression against human beings."
Today, The Movement Lawyering Clinic at Howard University School of Law released a fact-finding report-- "Inside PG County Bond Hearings,"--detailing civil rights concerns they uncovered while observing bond hearings in Prince George's County, Md. Read: law.howard.edu/content/new-re…
Over the course of three months, law students in the Clinic collectively observed approximately 100 hours of bond hearings. Through these hearings, students discovered several troubling trends relating to due process rights, judicial ethics and conduct, and over-criminalization.
The Howard University Law School clinic found out about the horrific conditions inside the local jail and the cruel court process through the GaspingForJustice.org project and campaign. Learn more here:

This is giving me life. Fiona Apple on FIRE about jail conditions & COVID. "I don't see how it's possible for anybody to not be furious. These are people. They don't deserve to be placed in these f*cking death camps. It doesn't sit with my alright. I can't just sit here." Part I:
Fiona Apple on empathy for those jailed: "Anybody out there could find 1 or 2 instances in their lives when they felt a little bit alone, afraid, disbelieved, forgotten about. Magnify that by an unimaginable amount. And ask why you're not doing something."
Months ago, Fiona Apple stepped up. After a federal judge dismissed dozens of sworn declarations from inside jail as “unhelpful” & only “marginally relevant.” She read their words. “I’ve lost my spirit, sort of given up.” More:

WITNESS: What's happened to Cassandra in Chicago is the story of the indifference of jails throughout U.S. Back in April she called 132x to save her husband from COVID in jail. Ignored. He died. Demanding change since. Ignored. More caged now than when he died. This is her voice:
Cassandra has been fighting since April. 8 months later: No masks. Crowded. Coughing. Ignored. Same indifference that's infecting and killing thousands in jails/prisons across the country. Now working to decarcerate & protect public health w/the Coalition to @EndMoneyBond.
As of yesterday, 5524 people were incarcerated in Chicago jail in unsanitary conditions. Unable to socially distance. The number of people caged in Chicago jail who are currently confirmed positive for COVID-19 has more than tripled, from 75 on November 9 to 350 on December 7.

Rudy Giuliani is racist garbage. Always has been. His life’s work has been oppressing & hurting Black & Brown people & communities. Continued to today as he tries to disenfranchise millions.
All this talk about “what happened to Rudy,” is BS. He was never “America’s Mayor.”
These people are sad, silly caricatures.

Nightmare. Been working w/ local organizers & people imprisoned in Michigan since COVID. Things are dire. Sharing some recent updates from colleague. "He just tried to kill himself. Told me he was suicidal. Bought him a book. Said it helped. Not enough apparently." #letMIPeopleGo
"Justin has fluid on his lungs. We lost Doc a couple of days ago. Rutikanga is likely going to be killed. I’m not joking. He called me late last night and basically said he loves me and he’s sorry but there’s a more serious hit on him since he dodged the last one." #LetMIPeopleGo
"Everyone is locked down, everyone is hungry. The guys in temporary segregation just tried to do a mass suicide." #LetMIPeopleGo

Is there a single governor, mayor, sheriff, district attorney, police chief, or judge in the country doing anything close to sufficient to prevent or stem COVID outbreaks, infections, & death in their jails/ prisons? I don’t think there is one. But please prove me wrong.
Governors could issue mass pardons & clemencies and decarcerate by the tens of thousands with the stroke of a pen.
Mayors could also order significant releases in their localities & call on their police forces to stand down & district attorneys to decline to prosecute and/or advocate for mass releases.

Indifference to suffering inside jails & prisons is not bound by political party. While so-called “progressive” leaders tout efforts to protect residents from COVID, they've ignored CDC guidelines, blocked access to care, & undermined COVID responses behind bars. Pay attention.
In New York. Your "hero," Governor Cuomo, only believes some lives are worth trying to save:
In Chicago, "liberal" Mayor Lori Lightfoot & Sheriff Tom Dart, have let the jail population explode again. Up 1000+ since the summer. Cassandra called 132 times to try to save her husband back in April. Ignored. Fighting ever since for others. Ignored.
