Our Consumer Bankruptcy Reform Act simplifies and modernizes the consumer bankruptcy system to help people struggling with debt – starting by creating a single system for all consumers, streamlining the filing process, and reducing filing fees. #FixBankruptcy
Our bill helps bankruptcy filers care for their families by helping renters with back rent avoid eviction, making student loan debt dischargeable, and letting people protect their homes and cars during the bankruptcy process. #FixBankruptcy
We also need to address racial and gender disparities in the bankruptcy system. That includes letting people discharge certain criminal justice fines but preventing the discharge of debts from civil rights violations, and exempting alimony and child support income. #FixBankruptcy
It’s time to stitch up the loopholes that allow the wealthy to exploit the bankruptcy system. And we need to crack down on predatory debt collection practices and hold corporate wrongdoers accountable in court. #FixBankruptcy
Even before the pandemic hit, Americans were already hanging on by their fingernails. In the last 40 years, consumer credit skyrocketed. People took on more debt to deal with stagnant wages and increasing costs of housing, education, medical care, and child care. #FixBankruptcy
I’ve sat in bankruptcy courtrooms and heard the stories of people who worked hard, had big dreams, and whose lives took a terrible turn. Bankruptcy is supposed to be a last resort to help people pull themselves back up. We must #FixBankruptcy to give people a fighting chance.
