Firstly orientate yourself - the fibula marks out the lateral side

1️⃣Soft tissues: scan the image for any soft tissue swelling - this can lead you to the site of any fracture
2️⃣Alignment: draw a vertical line down from the most lateral margin of the femur, you should only see a maximum of 5mm of the tibia to the lateral aspect of this line. If there is more than this (i.e. too much of the tibia is lateral) then suspect a fracture of the tibial plateau

I found it easier to piece apart the bones one by one:

▫️The CAPITATE sits in the middle and can be thought of as the ‘capital’ of the hand

▫️The HAMATE sits on the ulna side of the capitate and can be recognised by the hook which projects towards the palmar surface
