THREAD: The following tweets are for the purposes of stories that will appear in Sunday Times Daily. The videos and images depicted may be upsetting but are deemed to be in the public interest. This is the story of the Ayanda "Borhey" Mtila as far as we were able to verify it.
On 13 October Mtila as defacto overlord of the Boko Harram gang, allegedly carried out his penultimate cash-in-transit robbery. Sources say he sustained a head wound in a shootout with security guards. Some friends believe he was killed by a fellow robber.
iol.co.za/capeargus/news…
He died two days later, on 15 October, after allegedly being in a coma for more than a day. His funeral was a spectacle, held on Nyanga Sports fields on 24 October and attended by hundreds of people. Sources say it was made possible by Paarl businessman Lukhanyo "Spur" Mangena. ImageImageImage
Here is his ornate casket brought to the funeral service in a luxury limousine SUV, immortalising him in the eyes of the community in the style and pomp of other fallen gangsters such as Rashied Staggie.
Mangena, also known as Malambane, is also the owner of Batallion Football Club in Paarl and owns several businesses. WhatsApp messages sent to Mangena and phone calls went unanswered. He is depicted in pics and vids on his social media pages with, now deceased, Boko Haram members
After the funeral Boko Haram gang members celebrated by firing off their pistols into the air in the densely populated Nyanga. One of them, a woman known by the moniker Gallinah, almost fires a round into a crowd. More on Gallinah later.
Community members we spoke to for our articles are justifiably scared to speak, gangsters display behaviour like this in broad daylight and with impunity. It is also important to note that people like Mtila and Mangena are alleged to count politicians as their friends.
In the afternoon of 2 November gunmen stormed Boko Haram HQ in Gugulethu NY78 killing 8 people. Among the deceased were Bongiwe Peter, Lumka Hlotywa, Dumisani Andile Nongwanana, Khosi Yawa, Zama Mabusela & Thobekile Yawa. Other names could not be verified by ST Daily. Image
Only Gallinah and one other person are believed to have survived the attack. The rest of the Boko Haram gang are reportedly either awaiting trial or in hiding. However, a few days after the Gugs shooting several suspects were arrested on their way to a funeral in the Eastern Cape ImageImageImageImage
Detectives were trying to link the suspects to the NY78 murders. The suspects were connected to multiple murders, including 2 murders in Philippi East in June, 2 more in July, 3 murders in Gugs NY108 in June, 5 murders in Philippi East, Block 4, Lower Cross Roads in June.
Unverified videos were sent to us by police sources depicting suspects believed to have been connected to the series of events. Sources said the people depicted in these videos were people of interest. If you are able to help identifying these people, please DM me.
One of the people in this video is depicted dancing with a firearm in another video. A police source alleged that this person is a police officer from Kleinvlei SAPS, although this could not be independently verified.
Sources alleged that Mtila, wielding overwhelming influence as a township extortion boss, maintained peace between the Gupta gang from Lower Cross Roads and the Boko Haram gang. After his death however, the power balance was tipped, and the Guptas seized control through force.
Khayelitsha and Gugs residents reached out to us after our last thread saying that they lived in fear as gangsters roamed the streets with impunity. A video, posted on another FB page, depicts young men brandishing firearms in a car. If you have more information on this, DM.
I will add to this thread as needed.
SAPS spokesman Col Andrè Traut said the above video was being investigated. He also said that Gallinah was interviewed and not regarded as a person of interest in the Gugs shootings after a social media post circulated that she was wanted by police.
After the Gugs massacre on 21 November Mangena posted a video of some of the deceased Boko Haram members dancing. The caption read: "Rest In Peace my Nigger Ranjo and I’ll make sure they’ll pay for my lost" Image
Thanks to all of you who are responding to this thread. The information we are receiving through direct messages is greatly appreciated and it helps us to do more of this sort of work.

My latest exclusive on the alleged abduction of alleged ISIS cell leader Abdella Abadigga by South African special forces from a mall in Johannesburg:
- Abadigga fled Ethiopia in 2004 to South Africa. He allegedly faced persecution in his own country.🧵1/
timeslive.co.za/sunday-times-d…
- He applied for refugee status in 2008 and was granted status in 2009.
- He traveled to Ethiopia in 2012 using his Ethiopian passport (according to his brother whom I spoke to, this was to visit his gravely ill mother). 2/
This act is a contravention of the Refugee Act and should immediately initiate a process for withdrawal of your refugee status, however, this didn't happen. 3/

In light of our coverage on the terror threat on the front page of today's Sunday Times I'll make the following points:
1. The terror threat to SA is very real and the likelihood of an attack occuring on SA soil must be considered as long as the Moz insurgency rages on...
2. Yes, the US & SA have serious diplomatic difficulties at the moment due to our stance on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the BRICS partnership, and Saudi Arabia's possible addition, & they are applying pressure, but terrorism IS NOT the stick they would beat us with.
3. The world will watch to see how we deal with this threat & they will be looking closely at "political will". This means giving the HAWKS Crimes Against the State the resources they need to do their job.

THREAD: The following tweets are for the purposes of stories that will appear on @TimesLIVE. The videos and images depicted are deemed to be in the public interest. This is the story of SA's illegal mining gangs and how the Terene factions will affect Lesotho's elections in Oct.
Famo is the name of the music genre the men are dancing to in the previous video. This traditional music from Lesotho's mountain hinterland was the source of conflict between artists such as Mosotho Chakela & his rival musicians. The genre is now inextricably linked to Zama Zamas
Lesotho's ruling All Basotho Convention (ABC) political party is supported by Terene ea Khosi Mokata. Terene ea Chakela supports Democratic Congress (DC). Mokata's leader Sarel Sello, wanted for the Soweto tavern massacre, has rallied for ABC as is shown in this video from June.

I will list some stats from our @TLPremium story you won't find in the official crime stats.
But 1st, 3 MAJOR problems stand out.
1. Our parole system.
2. Our bail system.
3. Corruption/incompetence/completely overwhelmed police and courts
timeslive.co.za/sunday-times-d…
Here are the CIT robbery arrest stats for the Eastern Cape since July 2017. According to the data we have, only 3 out of 161 people arrested were convicted. Look at that withdrawal rate. The "Yes" refers to bail granted. Even when bail's denied, it's often granted by a high court
CIT robbery arrests for the Free State. A withdrawal rate of 23%. Withdrawals are done for several reasons including lack of evidence. At least Free State courts granted bail in very few cases. There were a total of 87 arrests since 2017 for CIT robberies in the Free State.

How did Yanga "Bara" Nyalara the Western Cape's most wanted man, who allegedly murdered 18 people, go from being denied bail for blowing up a cash-in-transit heist van in the Eastern Cape to ruling Khayelitsha with the gun for 2 years before being caught?

How did Ayanda "Stix" Yisaka, an alleged leader of the Boko Haram extortion gang in Gugulethu, go from being denied bail following a shootout with the police's Special Task Force on the N1 Highway in Paarl to allegedly gunning down 9 people, killing 4, in Gugulethu in June? Ayanda 'Stix' Yisaka enjoying freedom with his cash-in-trans
How was Solomon Phahlane Ngubeni, paroled in 2014 instead of 2027? The convicted cash-in-transit heist robber was arrested for the murder of Hawks officers Wynand Herbst and Delene Grobler-Koonin in Mafikeng in 2020 when he and members of his gang should have been in jail.
