My latest exclusive on the alleged abduction of alleged ISIS cell leader Abdella Abadigga by South African special forces from a mall in Johannesburg:
- Abadigga fled Ethiopia in 2004 to South Africa. He allegedly faced persecution in his own country.🧵1/

In light of our coverage on the terror threat on the front page of today's Sunday Times I'll make the following points:
1. The terror threat to SA is very real and the likelihood of an attack occuring on SA soil must be considered as long as the Moz insurgency rages on... 2. Yes, the US & SA have serious diplomatic difficulties at the moment due to our stance on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the BRICS partnership, and Saudi Arabia's possible addition, & they are applying pressure, but terrorism IS NOT the stick they would beat us with.

THREAD: The following tweets are for the purposes of stories that will appear on @TimesLIVE. The videos and images depicted are deemed to be in the public interest. This is the story of SA's illegal mining gangs and how the Terene factions will affect Lesotho's elections in Oct. Famo is the name of the music genre the men are dancing to in the previous video. This traditional music from Lesotho's mountain hinterland was the source of conflict between artists such as Mosotho Chakela & his rival musicians. The genre is now inextricably linked to Zama Zamas

I will list some stats from our @TLPremium story you won't find in the official crime stats.
But 1st, 3 MAJOR problems stand out.
1. Our parole system.
2. Our bail system.
3. Corruption/incompetence/completely overwhelmed police and courts
timeslive.co.za/sunday-times-d… Here are the CIT robbery arrest stats for the Eastern Cape since July 2017. According to the data we have, only 3 out of 161 people arrested were convicted. Look at that withdrawal rate. The "Yes" refers to bail granted. Even when bail's denied, it's often granted by a high court

How did Yanga "Bara" Nyalara the Western Cape's most wanted man, who allegedly murdered 18 people, go from being denied bail for blowing up a cash-in-transit heist van in the Eastern Cape to ruling Khayelitsha with the gun for 2 years before being caught?
timeslive.co.za/sunday-times-d… How did Ayanda "Stix" Yisaka, an alleged leader of the Boko Haram extortion gang in Gugulethu, go from being denied bail following a shootout with the police's Special Task Force on the N1 Highway in Paarl to allegedly gunning down 9 people, killing 4, in Gugulethu in June? EXCLUSIVE: Cash-in-transit heist criminals have gained a massive advantage over the police trying to catch them before they blow up security trucks and kill guards. Our first @TimesLIVE Ivestigations story in a series about cash-in-transit heists. 1/ This is because police managers responsible for signing off on Act 70 cell phone interceptions have failed to sign off on applications for some time. This appears to be partly as a result of a lack of admin resources dating back to at least February 2021 but also... 2/

The murder case against Czech crime boss Radovan Krecjir and 3 Gauteng taxi bosses Siboniso Miya, Nkanyiso Mafunda and Mfaniseni Memela may break under the pressure of what appears to be astounding irregularities in the state's case around its key witnesses. 1/ @TimesLIVE Investigations found:
1. Key witness Jacob Nare, is not really Jacob Nare. In fact, the real Nare's identity was allegedly "stolen" by this imposter in 2010 with the help of police crime intelligence. The real Nare was murdered in 2014 in a bizarre knife attack. 2/

THREAD: The following tweets are for the purposes of stories that will appear in Sunday Times Daily. The videos and images depicted may be upsetting but are deemed to be in the public interest. This is the story of the Ayanda "Borhey" Mtila as far as we were able to verify it. On 13 October Mtila as defacto overlord of the Boko Harram gang, allegedly carried out his penultimate cash-in-transit robbery. Sources say he sustained a head wound in a shootout with security guards. Some friends believe he was killed by a fellow robber.
