Fact: Tipped restaurant workers were left out of Gov. Cuomo’s executive wage order last year, ending the subminimum wage in New York state for nearly 1 million service industry workers in ‘miscellaneous’ industries. [2/10]

Fact: The largest industry with tipped workers earning a subminimum wage is the restaurant industry. [3/10]

Fact: Nearly 70% of tipped restaurant workers are women.

Fact: The Covid-19 pandemic has made the situation much worse for many of these women, and now it’s an issue of public health as women are being asked to pull their mask down by customers, or risk losing out on income. [5/10]

Fact: Women already faced high rates of sexual harassment in the restuarant industry as a result of having to rely on tips. Now, as a result of Covid-19, ‘tips are way down in restaurants and sexual harassment is up.’ as reported by @thelily [6/10]

Fact: Gov. Cuomo considers himself a feminist. Female restaurant workers in New York are at his mercy. He is the one with power to put an end to this toxic, patriarchal culture, where women are at the mercy of their male customers just to be able to and make ends meet. [7/10]

@GovernorCuomo, we are calling on you to make things right for the NY restaurant workers who you excluded last December. As another shutdown looms, the situation, which was already severe, has now become a matter of life or death for many ‘essential’ workers. [8/10]
