On Dec. 14, 2012, 20 children and 6 adults were killed in a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In this piece for #IETheIssue, @RuthBashinksy reports on the toll conspiracy theories about the massacre continue to take on victims’ families. ietv.co/37yXhX3
1/ Lenny Pozner’s son Noah was one of the 20 children killed by gunman Adam Lanza, who opened fire using a semi-automatic rifle in Noah’s classroom before turning the gun on himself. Hours before, Lanza had fatally shot his own mother at their home. ietv.co/37yXhX3
2/ All 20 children were either 6 or 7 years old. Six adult staff members were also killed in the shooting. ietv.co/37yXhX3
3/ When news of the shooting broke, Pozner and Noah’s mother, Veronique De La Rosa, raced to the school, terrified. The family would soon learn that their two daughters survived the shooting – but their son did not. ietv.co/37yXhX3
4/ At that moment, Pozner’s life changed forever. Because not only did he have to learn how to live without his son, but he also would become a lightning rod for conspiracy theorists. ietv.co/37yXhX3
5/ Within hours, Pozner and the other families became the targets of conspiracy theorists who claimed that it wasn’t a real shooting, that the children were not real, or that the government may be involved, or that they were faking their grief. ietv.co/37yXhX3
6/ For Pozner, conspiracy theories about Big Foot, or the notion that Area 51 is packed with things the government is hiding, are harmless, noting how little they compare to what he and other parents who lost children at Sandy Hook have dealt with. ietv.co/37yXhX3
7/ “[But] today, there is no separation between the online world and offline world and things from the internet carry into our daily lives and can affect us…” ietv.co/37yXhX3
8/ “…That is how the internet and false theories have impacted our lives. While Alex Jones knows he is lying many of the people that share it don't know that they are sharing lies.” ietv.co/37yXhX3
9/ When a mass casualty happens, witnesses often speak to reporters. Pozner says this is fodder for conspiracy theorists, who vilify witnesses, and make videos and write blogs about them. And often, the people at the core of a tragedy are also scrutinized. ietv.co/37yXhX3
10/ Pozner decided he would be transparent by showing the accusers evidence. “Whatever information I had access to, I released. Noah’s birth certificate, his death certificate, the medical examiner’s report. Photos of Noah and his very short life…” ietv.co/37yXhX3
11/ However, it did not quiet those who believed that Noah did not die and that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax. And, the harassing and online stalking continued to escalate. ietv.co/37yXhX3
12/ Pozner was also on the receiving end of antisemitism. After Noah was written about in the media as a Jewish child from Sandy Hook, ugly comments made by faceless commenters were rampant. ietv.co/37yXhX3
13/ Pozner pushed back, becoming an advocate in an effort to protect those more vulnerable than he from the online harassment that grows out of conspiracy theorists, and launched the nonprofit organization, @honrnetwork, in 2014. ietv.co/37yXhX3
14/ The initiative made Pozner a bigger target. He continues to be harassed and has dealt with death threats. One woman was sentenced to prison for death threats she made against him. Another was arrested for distributing private information about him. ietv.co/37yXhX3
15/ “I have to make sure my life is safer. Having grade school children and not expose them to any additional danger coming from people who are confused about what the truth is. People who don’t care what truth is.” ietv.co/37yXhX3
Noah Pozner would have turned 14 on Nov. 20.

Earlier this year, the story of a missing soldier named Vanessa Guillén set off the #IAmVanessaGuillen movement, inspiring countless others to share their own stories of abuse and assault in the American military. @DeborahHasting8 reports. THREAD: ietv.co/3nXFtvd
1/ Private first class Vanessa Guillén vanished on an April Sunday, in broad daylight, from Fort Hood, the 3rd largest Army base in the country. Her family would later say she spoke of being sexually harassed there, and of being afraid to report it. ietv.co/3nXFtvd
2/ Guillén’s disappearance went largely unreported in the national media until her relatives began holding press conferences, accusing officials of deliberately misleading them. National marches followed and politicians and celebrities took up her cause. ietv.co/3nXFtvd
For our 2nd edition of #IETheIssue, we’re examining the modern misinformation landscape. In this piece, we report on how the CIA used disinformation to support the violent “Jakarta Method” in order to influence global politics. THREAD: ietv.co/2IYzqaW
1/ On Oct. 1, 1965, in Jakarta, Indonesia, military officials said they believed their superior officers were organizing a coup, and so they kidnapped some of them. ietv.co/2IYzqaW
2/ Six generals ended up dead. A general named Suharto immediately took control of the country against orders from then-President Sukarno. ietv.co/2IYzqaW
It’s been over two years since Botham Jean was killed in his apartment by then-officer Amber Guyger. In this Inside Edition In-Depth piece, @OfficerStephNY reports on how Jean’s family is still seeking closure following his death. THREAD: ietv.co/33ccPyK
1/ Amber Guyger was a police officer for the Dallas Police Department when she opened the unlocked door to Jean's apartment, thinking it were her own home, and shot him in the chest as enjoyed a bowl of ice cream and watched television on Sept. 6, 2018. ietv.co/33ccPyK
2/ Moments after the shooting, Guyger, who had just come off a 14-hour shift, said she realized she was in the wrong apartment. Her realization came too little, too late. Jean, a beloved son and brother who worked as an accountant, was already dead. ietv.co/33ccPyK
For our 2nd edition of #IETheIssue, we’re examining the modern misinformation landscape. In this piece, @MaraMontalbano reports on the lingering conspiracy that the moon landing was a hoax (it wasn’t). 👨🚀🌕 THREAD: ietv.co/2UOza0s
1/ Buzz Aldrin punched a guy, back in 2002 when a man confronted the history-making astronaut on the street outside a Los Angeles hotel with a Bible, asked him to swear on the book that he walked on the moon, and called him a liar when he refused. ietv.co/2UOza0s
2/ This is just one example of how the small but vocal group of “moon hoaxers” have tried for decades to prove that it was all an expensive ruse orchestrated by the United States government. ietv.co/2UOza0s
Marlene Taraskiewicz has been searching for her daughter Susan’s killer for close to three decades. In this recent Inside Edition In-Depth piece, she explained to @maramontalbano why she isn’t close giving up. THREAD: ietv.co/3jCc33j
1/ “These people that did this are looking over their shoulder every year because I'm not going anywhere. I am a fighter. My daughter was a fighter.” – Marlene Taraskiewicz ietv.co/3jCc33j
2/ On Sept. 14, 1992, 27-year-old Susan “Su” Taraskiewicz of Saugus, Mass, was found dead in the trunk of her own car. She had been beaten and stabbed. ietv.co/3jCc33j
For our 2nd edition of #IETheIssue, we’re examining the modern misinformation landscape. In this piece, @salbonoie reports on how leaders in New York’s Long Island are putting ideology aside to fight climate change. THREAD: ietv.co/3eR8Ufk
1/ Just off mainland New York State and containing the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, Long Island’s geographical location is prime real estate. Its beaches are some of the most desirable in the country, and it boasts a vibrant wine industry. ietv.co/3eR8Ufk
2/ It’s also dramatically experiencing the impacts of climate change. And as the climate changes, the spaces inhabited by humans are changing, too. ietv.co/3eR8Ufk
