@secstatewa Kim Wyman is kicking off ceremony by praising voter turnout & peaceful transfer of power. She is choking up a bit as she talks about end of "one of the most contentious elections of our lifetime" "This is getting to me today."
@secstatewa Wyman says ceremony is brining the 2020 election to a close. "Thank God," she says.
@secstatewa Note: ceremony is taking place in Senate chambers - for greater social distancing. Usually held in smaller reception room in the capitol.
@secstatewa After @GovInslee brought the heat at Trump and Republicans who have refused to accept election results, WA's 12 presidential electors are now voting.
@secstatewa@GovInslee In an outcome everyone could have predicted, Joe Biden has been awarded WA's 12 Electoral College votes. Now voting for VP - WHO WILL THEY PICK??!
Elector Jack Arends broke down sobbing as he related that he had terminal illness and wanted to cast his electoral vote for Joe Biden as a last act.
"I was glad to do my duty to rid my nation of a petty dictator!" Arends said.
Elector Sophia Danenberg introduced herself as daughter of Japanese American mother and African American father, and praised the election of Kamala Harris - a "fellow Blasian"
Danenberg like several others said she hopes the Electoral College can be done away with.
And... we're finished with this arcane and outdated - but constitutionally mandated - ceremony. See you in four years.
