LAST JEDI APPRECIATION THREAD.
I wanna start with some love for the posters. The way Luke ominously lingers in the background (where the villain usually is) is just so interesting. Also the character posters! ImageImageImage
This first teaser was so bold to end like that.
I. LOVE. THIS. TRAILER.
The music, the dialogue, the suspense. It all just blends so well.
Us TFA reylos can all remember losing our minds after this. Even tho its not exactly like this in the film, its not bait cuz the idea of her looking for her place with Ben is still in the film. And the way this trailer moment has the same soft romantic lighting of the hand touch ImageImageImage
anyway, lets get into the movie....
the way these destroyers just thunder out of hyperspace gives me chills every time. ImageImageImage
such a good shot Image
bb8 with the "i've got a bad feeling about this" Image
another amazing shot Image
I honestly enjoyed that opening bit with Poe tooling with Hux. I think it's important for people to remember that these movies are also for kids to enjoy and that little yo mama joke is mostly for them. ImageImageImageImage
This scene does a good job of leaning into Hux's flaws. He has this need to prove himself and prove his ferocity even to "a single light fighter." He wants everyone to know that he intends wipe the resistance from the galaxy because Snoke doesn't think he can.
People always ask, "why would Hux even bother talking to Poe, why not just kill him?" and this is because of his arrogance. A theme that has been very present when it comes to "villains" in general.
The plan to clear out the surface canons and then bomb the ship was a good plan. But when everyone evacuated before the dreadnought struck, Leia, thinking defensively, saw the plan as pointless. Whereas Poe, thinking offensively, thought they should take out the dreadnought. ImageImage
Because everyone in the Resistance is already safe, the loss of their fleet in the attack hits hard. But had they not been able to evacuate the base yet, the loss of the fleet to take out the dreadnought would've been seen as heroic if it saved everyone on the base
Fighting offensively vs defensively is a prevalent theme in star wars. A jedi never draws their weapon first. For the most part the "good guys" only fight with necessity. Even though the dreadnought is a "fleet killer" taking it out in this scene wasn't necessity.
This is an important lesson for Poe to learn and it's important that that the movie starts with this plan failing. Because like the enemy, Poe's arrogance gets the better of him.
"wipe that nervous expression off your face 3po" 😆 Image
i'd like to take a moment to admire Poe drifting in an x-wing ImageImage
this whole sequence is just such a masterpiece
Snoke's belittling of Hux was the perfect set up for him becoming maniacally villainous Image
I love the continuity of Finn waking up and shouting "Rey!" The last think he remembers is being defeated by Kylo Ren with Rey lying unconscious in the snow. Image
"Finn, naked, leaking bag?" 😆
I'll take my finnpoe crumbs where i can get them Image
they're in love and you cannot convince me otherwise ImageImageImageImage
The transitions in this movie are sooooo good!
the "where's rey" then it cuts to ahch-to, where rey is...genius
fuck dem jedi Image
This was a great way to introduce to who Luke is in this movie. It's a shock to many that the "new hope" has become so hopeless and this plays into that shock by ripping off the bandaid with him throwing the lightsaber
Throughout Rey's entire experience on the island you're supposed to dislike who Luke is because you're looking at it from her point of view. I feel like a lot of people missed that. Rey is the protagonist here, not Luke Image
love her Image
Another amazing transition. Luke asking "where's Han?" then cutting to Ben and Snoke's villainous laugh. Yes, Ben was the one who killed him, but if anything this moment should remind you that it was all orchestrated by Snoke. Snoke is the real evil here.
the way this rivalry slowly builds up and up Image
the way vader's theme subtly plays while Snoke says "a new vader" and cuts off when he says "now I fear, I was mistaken" Image
he's just so sad Image
i hate thinking about how this probably happened often Image
Ben is being torn apart by the light and dark. His soul is in agony. He thought killing his father would kill the light in him and end his suffering but all it did was divide him even more. It's the start of him realizing darkness isn't the right path, the start of his redemption
the subtlety of implying that Ben is the last hope
The breaking of the mask is one of my favorite parts of the last jedi. He needs to stop pretending to be Vader 2.0 and establish his own character. ImageImageImage
Another great transition. Also it's important to remember that when Rey says "there's no light left in Kylo Ren" she is an unreliable narrator, and later in the movie she learns that isn't true.
"You think what? I’m gonna walk out with a laser sword and face down the whole First Order?"
subtle foreshadowing Image
Rey: I'm not leaving without you!

Rey (two days later): *leaves without him* Image
where are you from?

nowhere

no one's from nowhere

Jakku

alright that is pretty much nowhere
reminder that the grandson of Anakin Skywalker and the son of Han Solo is a kickass pilot
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Image
i don't understand how anyone could ever watch this scene and not want him to go home to his mother ImageImage
the silence in this moment is so powerful Image
and then it's broken ImageImageImage
reminder that Ben would've tried to stop the missiles with the force had he not been caught off guard
i honestly have so many questions about this moment, does leia know Ben wasn't the one who fired on her? does she know he wished he could stop it? does he think she's dead in this moment? when does he realize she's still alive? ImageImageImage
another great transition ImageImageImage
😆😆😆😆 Image
I personally think that he should've eaten it (and maybe later her does). The fact that he kills it and doesn't eat it means that its death was meaningless.
this whole scene is star wars at it's finest ImageImageImageImage
This is how you properly do nostalgia. It has to have emotional weight and meaning. When it doesn't, it just feels so hollow. It's been 3 years and I still tear up watching this scene.
I kinda wanted to see Leia's message again in ix in a scene with R2 and Ben, and it gets him thinking about turning back. Like maybe in a scene where the gang is captured and they're trying to get info out of R2 but he just keeps playing Leia the message
the way Poe actually thought it might be him for a moment 😄 ImageImage
she deserves more love Image
Reminder that a few minutes ago he didn't know what she looked like. They've never met. To her, Poe is a low ranking officer with a habit of jumping into thinks without thinking. She's not gonna tell him shit. We the audience only think she should because Poe is a main character. Image
I think that the emotional weight and power of paige's death is what made me gravitate towards Rose, and that's kinda the whole point. This was an amazing use of a set up, and a reveal ImageImageImage
doing talking
I love her instant shift from starstruck fangirl to Resistance badass
i'm a sucker for nerds bonding over nerd shit Image
Reminder that Poe needs to learn that you can't just blow everything up. Poe's character in TLJ isn't a shift from TFA because in TFA his whole story was blowing up Star Killer base. We didn't really see him in any other context till TLJ Image
i love this moment Image
ohmygodohmygodohmygod Image
ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod ImageImage
ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod ImageImage
OH. MY. GOD. ImageImage
I spent 2 years thinking about all the ways this relationship could develop in episode 8. I think we all knew they had some kind of special connection through the force, but I never imagined THIS. They're physically together, across space and time!
It still amazes me how perfect the force connection is. It's fucking genius. Given the choice between a kiss in viii or the force connection, I'd choose the force connection. They're just...destiny. How can you not ship it? Anyway, #ThankYouRianJohnson for the force connection
love them ImageImageImageImage
the slide 🥰 Image
rey: did you really think that would work?

ben: no, but it was worth a shot ImageImageImage
I love how she's just like FUCK YOU and he's in too much wonderment to even care ImageImage
"you're not doing this, the effort would kill you"
subtle foreshadowing
i love how she doesn't tell him ImageImage
"I was cleaning my blaster, it went off"
so that's what the kids are calling it these days
yin-yang, cuz, u kno...reylo Image
the evidence is all right there and still people didn't pick up on it
okay, but what is it?

girl...same Image
#ThankYouRianJohnson for the best explanation of the force we've ever gotten Image
I love Luke's explanation that the force does not belong to the Jedi, like everything else, they belong to it.
reminder that Rey is really fucking powerful Image
and "powerful light, powerful darkness" is the only explanation needed
Reminder that Rey is definitely not flawless. She went straight to the dark.
"I've seen this raw strength only once before, in Ben Solo." Rey and Ben are equally powerful in the force because of their connection. And because of that connection together, they are the most powerful thing in the galaxy.
I LOVE how she loves water. It's just so perfect. Image
also the poetry of the falling rain and the falling sparks is 🧑‍🍳😘 ImageImage
If anyone else were to shout "murderous snake!" at Kylo Ren, there'd be blood. But with Rey he just does not care, he just takes it.
the way they look at each other
they've known each other for like two days and already he know when she has a "look in her eye"
rey: you're a monster

ben: yeah i know, it sucks

rey:
“Yes, I am,” Kylo said, and there was no menace in his voice—only misery.

how does that not scream bendemption!?!?!?
I enjoyed seeing the high society side of Star Wars. It's an interesting and new perspective and it adds a lot to the story. Image
I love you you can hear the coins rattling around in bb8 as he rolls through the casino
love her Image
i don't care what anyone else says, TLJ has great humor Image
All the Ahch-To cinematography is just so beautiful Image
"Now that they're extinct, the Jedi are romanticized, deified. But if you strip away the myth and look at their deeds, the legacy of the Jedi is failure. Hypocrisy, hubris."
sing it sister
I personally believe that the point of this back and forth between Rey and Luke is that the jedi's legacy is filled with good and bad. Jedi raised Vader, and a Jedi saved him. The lesson isn't that the jedi should end, more so that it is they need to change and evolve.
Again, we are watching this scene through Rey's perspective. People get mad at TLJ bashing the Jedi and they're missing the fact that that's the point.
genius Image
there's been a lot of debate about them saving the fathiers but not the children, but like they're on a dangerous mission and only have about 6 hours left. What are they gonna do with 3 kids?
wait just realized something, were Finn and Rose about to ditch bb8?
Reminder that Luke doesn't decide to walk out with a laser sword and face down the whole first order because he's changed his mind about the jedi and being a legend. He does it for Leia. ImageImage
love them ImageImage
I love the use of different perspectives to tell the temple story. It just fits so well with star wars. So much of the news or stories that travel through the galaxy just go from person to person. Along the way stories get altered by different interpretations and perspectives.
this is just so cool Image
she was sad and alone and the only thing she wanted to do was talk about it with the only other person who would understand Image
the way he's tearing up while she's telling him about how sad and alone she feels Image
"you're not alone"

"neither are you"
Their entire lives they both felt like something was missing. Like a part of them was missing. Then they found each other and suddenly felt less alone. They are the other half of each other's souls. It doesn't get more poetically romanic than that.
closest thing we'll get to a sex scene in a star wars movie
i love how she just immediately defends Ben Image
the greatest teacher failure is Image
"We are what they grow beyond, that is the true burden of all masters." #ThankYouRianJohnson for one of the greatest star wars scenes ever Image
"good guys, bad guys, made up words"
I love how TLJ pushes the theme that the Rebels, the Empire, the Resistance, the First Order, the Sith, the Jedi, in the end they're not so different. It's the perfect setup for the saga ending somewhere in the middle of the two sides
she Image
bb8 pretending to be a mouse droid is just so cute
this whole scene is the definition of sexual tension Image
Gonna pick this up after the 17th
