It shouldn't be news that the @ADL is not an ally to progressive movements, and that it's time to #DroptheADL. The clear record of their neoconservative political agenda and their spying on and undermining of movements for justice goes back at least 30 years. (Thread)
In 1993, Robert Freidman details a huge domestic spying scandal wherein the @ADL's "Fact Finding" dept monitored 10k people and almost 1000 groups, including ACLU, NAACP, ACT-UP, progressive Jewish orgs, anti-Apartheid groups, and any/all Palestinian, Arab, or Muslim groups.
The @ADL intel was directly shared with their "official friends" -- the org's euphemism for the incredibly cozy relationships they've always had with U.S. FBI, CIA, and police and with such "friends" in Israeli and Apartheid South African spy agencies.
1993 NYT oped: Dennis King & Chip Berlet describe @ADL as a "neoconservative citadel." "The @ADL spin doctors adopted a political double standard that attacked many civil rights activists as ideologically suspect while ignoring the bigotry of the ADL's new right-wing allies."
1995: @ADL's rapprochement with the antisemitic Christian Right: "after the '67 Arab-Israeli war, which led many...secular leftists to criticize Israel...a growing # of Jewish agencies were willing to put their misgivings aside and develop ties with...fundamentalist Christians."
And here a @JewishCurrents piece from 1987 describes the grotesque (and familiar) way that CIA agents weaponized antisemitism as part of their apparoach to anti-Sandinista propaganda, and how the @ADL furthered that false narrative along with the Reagan white house
For progressives, the past and present is clear: droptheadl.org
