As expressed in Rom 13, government is a power created by God to fight, punish, & hold back evil, particularly thru violence (though not to defeat it). Government executes vengeance b/c it receives that authority from God (Rom 12:19; Heb 10:30; Deut 32:35). 1/12 Image
Initially, God did not want Israel to have a king (1 Sam 8:7). He was to be the king over Israel while the other nations had their gods (Deut 32:8 LXX, DSS). But sin and Israel's accompanying desire to be like other nations brought this about. 2/12 Image
In permitting a king, God warned Israel of the corruption & oppression that would follow (1 Sam 8:11-18). Noting a king would be Israel's choice (Deut 17:15; 28:36), God set rules to limit the power of the king to oppress (17:14-20). 3/12 ImageImage
When God predicts exile due to Israel's sins, he emphasizes their desire for a king (Deut 28:36). The OT records how the corruption, oppression, enriching, & injustice of the kings led Israel to covenant breach & exile. Even the greatest & wisest kings were corrupted. 4/12
Because of sin, none were immune to the corruption & oppression that came w/ the government power to steal & commit violence. As both 1 Sam 8 & Rom 13 note, theft & violence are the inherent accompanying characteristics of government (see my article). 5/12 panis-circenses.blogspot.com/2017/07/govern…
Importantly, while government is an interim ethic to punish evil, it does so through violence with eye-for-an-eye justice. This is the justice of the world, the instinct & sense of fairness common to all societies & peoples. But it isn't the highest of ethics. 6/12
When Cain murdered Abel, God gave him grace, a punishment far less than what he deserved. This was the first case, & God was unjust. Indeed, God promised a 7-fold unjust vengeance for anyone who executed justice on Cain. Grace is unjust. 7/12 Image
But in Gen 4:23-24, Lamech says he executed a disproportionate, unjust 77-fold vengeance by killing two people who hit him. Lamech cites the 7-fold vengeance of Cain. Lamech assumed the prerogatives of God. 8/12 Image
In Gen 9:6, God establishes the eye-for-an-eye justice meant to prevent disproportionate revenge, a reason why vengeance is executed by government. Possibly connected to Lamech & the violence necessitating the flood (6:11ff). But this differs from the grace in Gen 4:15. 9/12 ImageImage
Going back to Romans 13, the justice of government in 13:1-4 is deliberately contrasted with the justice for Christians mentioned just prior in 12:14-21. This is a higher ethic that corresponds to Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5:38-42) and God in Gen 4. 10/12 ImageImage
The central point is the difficulty of the Church partnering with the State to advance the Kingdom. Government has a lower ethic of theft & violence that necessitates significant limits, but even then, it easily slides into corruption, oppression, & personal enrichment. 11/12
To support government beyond its narrow parameters, or to use government to supposedly correct societal issues of health & wealth redistribution & coercion is unethical, contrary to the gospel, and unjust. 12/12

Ukraine as nation is a recent concept, being part of Russia since the 18th c. Ukraine is a divided country, w/ sizeable population of Russian speakers & pro-Russia citizens. Some citizens want closer ties w/ Europe, others with Russia.
The eastern side of the country would like to be a part of Russia as they had for over two centuries, up until 30 yrs ago. When the USSR began to break apart, the US gave Gorbachev assurances that NATO wouldn't advance into the Eastern Bloc if he didn't call out the troops.
Within 10 yrs, the US went back on those assurances and NATO moved into the east. NATO was originally designed to be a military counter to Soviet Russia, yet it has continued for three decades, inching closer Russia w/ new treaties & assurances. Russia has noticed.

I've begun Johannes Pedersen's book Israel: Its Life and Culture. I purchased a used copy over the Internet, and I just discovered receipt from the previous owner who bought the book in Cambridge in 1967. Apparently, he was a professor at BYU. ImageImage
Apparently, the name Benjamin means "son of my right hand" or "son of the south," b/c when facing east, the right hand is toward the south ... which is where the tribe eventually settled w/ relation to the northern kingdom of Israel. ImageImageImageImage
"For the Israelite it is a matter of course that common flesh makes common character. Therefore family, mishpacha, is the designation of those who are of the same kind, have the same essential features, and it is the essential factor of the community."

Is it permitted to quote one's supervisor in one's dissertation? Why didn't I think of that?
"Powerful Practices: Paul's Principalities and Powers Revisited," by Robert Ewusie Moses (Duke Divinity: 2012).
Analyzing the approaches of Arnold, Bultmann, Berkhof, and Wink. I favor the last two.

"The Old Testament Background for Paul's Use of 'Principalities and Powers," by Ronn A. Johnson (Dissertation [DTS 2005]).

[All quotes unless otherwise noted.]
The specific titles archē and exousia are used in the LXX passage which functioned as the climax to the Son of Man vision.

[That is true. LXX Dan 7:27. Why didn’t I know/remember that?]
This dissertation will argue that Paul’s specific use of the archē and exousia phrase recalls the created gods of the first commandment and their role under Yahweh. In doing so it will further recommend that Paul interpreted the death, resurrection ...

“Pagan and Christian Demonology of the Ante-Nicene Period,” by Diana Lynn Walzel (Master of Art’s Thesis, Rice University, 1972).

All are exact quotes unless otherwise indicated.
The Alexandrian Jew Philo was the first to make the identification between Greek demonology and Jewish angelology. He clearly recognized the state of Platonic demonology when he stated that demon, angel, and soul were all different words for the same thing.
In earlier Greek thought, demons played an important role, but this role changed frequently. The demons did not really gain individuality or personality until after Plato.

I'm reading a book (2019) in which this quote from an Amos Young (Fuller Seminary) appears:
I'll find out from whence it came later. This is very close to Croasmun's view of Sin (2016) and uses the exact same language as that of emergent entities. This is also my hypothetical view of the Powers.
In just a year, I've discovered two reputable, mainstream, conservative scholars who've reached a theological "conclusion" I reached in 2015. It appears more than one person is independently reading the biblical material & arriving at the same basic conclusions. That's positive.
