Ukraine as nation is a recent concept, being part of Russia since the 18th c. Ukraine is a divided country, w/ sizeable population of Russian speakers & pro-Russia citizens. Some citizens want closer ties w/ Europe, others with Russia. The eastern side of the country would like to be a part of Russia as they had for over two centuries, up until 30 yrs ago. When the USSR began to break apart, the US gave Gorbachev assurances that NATO wouldn't advance into the Eastern Bloc if he didn't call out the troops.

I've begun Johannes Pedersen's book Israel: Its Life and Culture. I purchased a used copy over the Internet, and I just discovered receipt from the previous owner who bought the book in Cambridge in 1967. Apparently, he was a professor at BYU. ImageImage Apparently, the name Benjamin means "son of my right hand" or "son of the south," b/c when facing east, the right hand is toward the south ... which is where the tribe eventually settled w/ relation to the northern kingdom of Israel. Is it permitted to quote one's supervisor in one's dissertation? Why didn't I think of that? "Powerful Practices: Paul's Principalities and Powers Revisited," by Robert Ewusie Moses (Duke Divinity: 2012).

"The Old Testament Background for Paul's Use of 'Principalities and Powers," by Ronn A. Johnson (Dissertation [DTS 2005]).

[All quotes unless otherwise noted.] The specific titles archē and exousia are used in the LXX passage which functioned as the climax to the Son of Man vision.

[That is true. LXX Dan 7:27. Why didn’t I know/remember that?]

“Pagan and Christian Demonology of the Ante-Nicene Period,” by Diana Lynn Walzel (Master of Art’s Thesis, Rice University, 1972).

All are exact quotes unless otherwise indicated. The Alexandrian Jew Philo was the first to make the identification between Greek demonology and Jewish angelology. He clearly recognized the state of Platonic demonology when he stated that demon, angel, and soul were all different words for the same thing.

I'm reading a book (2019) in which this quote from an Amos Young (Fuller Seminary) appears: I'll find out from whence it came later. This is very close to Croasmun's view of Sin (2016) and uses the exact same language as that of emergent entities. This is also my hypothetical view of the Powers.

Drove 8 hrs to Ohio listening to Led Zeppelin (albums, live, solo) all the way there. Then listened to Led Zeppelin (etc.) all the way back. Fantastic drive. Then the missus caught me "listening to music in my head" (Baptists don't dance) as I'm putting away the dishes we put in the dishwasher before we left. Missus: "You're 'listening' to Led Zeppelin in your head, aren't you?" ME: "..."

1 Timothy is to Ephesus. Note 2:8-11, Paul uses plurals men (v.8) & women (vv.9-10), switches to the singular (woman) in v.11, suggesting he may be refer to a specific case. Unlike English, Greek doesn’t need a definite article to be definite, so it can read “the woman.” 1/15 The Greek words for woman & man here can mean "wife" & "husband" depending on the context. The word for “exercise authority” in v. 12 is αὐθεντεῖν, which, then meant “bully," "domineer." It’s not the usual word for "authority over" (see 1 Cor 6:12; 7:4; note Luke 22:25f). 2/15

Sidebar: JAT Robinson doesn't mention which Latin Fathers, so I think I'll peruse the Ante-Obscene, Obscene, & Post-Obscene Fathers. Origen (Against Celsus, LXIV), "when he had 'put off the governments and powers," ... Hippolytus (The Refutation of All Heresies, VIII, iii), "might strip off that body," ...

Interesting thought. Malachi was written around the time of Ezra-Neh. The latter is anti-climactic, legalistic, covenant-thwarting, & ineffective. Based on Torah commitment, Ezra commands the Jews to divorce their pagan wives & send away kids (Ezra 10). Mal 2 says God hates this. Ezra-Neh is a post-Exilic reaction to the errors that led to Exile, but the ancient Jews were fulfilling Torah in the wrong spirit, which was oppressing women, children, & foreigners. They were making the same mistakes of the pre-Exilic Israelites but from the opposite direction.

The book of Job teaches that not all those who suffer are either punished or abandoned by God. Jesus taught on this subject (John 9:2; Luke 13:1-6) in his lead up to the cross. In Luke 13, when commenting upon Pilate’s evil, he warns about what could happen to the entire nation. In Jesus’ prophetic work, he called Israel to abandon its ethnocentric violence. He saw Israel’s revolutionary approach towards Rome leading to destruction. In one way, his crucifixion was an enacted parable, representing Rome’s eventual destruction of ancient Israel.

Have any of the figures associated with CBN or the Founders raised a cry about ESS, or any way close to the prophetic doom they herald about CRT and women preachers? 1/4 I'm not suggesting they go after Bruce Ware (they shouldn't!). For 1,700 yrs, Christianity said doctrines about God's nature are of highest importance for which councils, creeds, & excommunications are necessary. But the self-appointed defenders of orthodoxy have no interest. 2/4

As expressed in Rom 13, government is a power created by God to fight, punish, & hold back evil, particularly thru violence (though not to defeat it). Government executes vengeance b/c it receives that authority from God (Rom 12:19; Heb 10:30; Deut 32:35). 1/12 Image Initially, God did not want Israel to have a king (1 Sam 8:7). He was to be the king over Israel while the other nations had their gods (Deut 32:8 LXX, DSS). But sin and Israel's accompanying desire to be like other nations brought this about. 2/12 Image

Image McAlpine notes Berkhof argued the weapon the Powers wield is ideological: claims to legitimacy. After self-proclaimed guardians of truth/justice crucified God, false claims were exposed. I've yet to find this argument fully satisfactory, though it points in the right direction.

Don’t allow politics to distract from the Faith. We do build the Kingdom. Here's the Scriptural evidence for this: 1a) The Satan is a ruler of earth (Matt 4:8f; 12:25f; Mark 3:24ff; Luke 4:5f; 11:17; John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11; Acts 28:18; Eph 2:2; Col 1:13; Rev 2:13). 1/4 1b) Casting out of the demonic relates to the coming of the Kingdom (Matt 12:28; Luke 11:20; Col 1:13). 1c) We are called to cast out the demonic (Matt 7:22; 10:1; 10:8; Mark 3:15; Acts 16:18; 26:18; Eph 6:10-20; Col 4:11). 2/4

Heiser put special emphasis on Psalm 32 as fundamental to his thinking. Others on this subject also note it. It's Yahweh in council w/ other elohiym, not human rulers. Two points of interest: 1) These elohiym are being criticised by Yahweh in his presence. ImageImage However we understand the "mythological" analogy, it's interesting these bad elohiym ("angels"?) are in his presence ("heaven"?). But in Job 1-2, the elohiym, including the Satan, appear before Yahweh. Not unlike the Green Knight appearing before Arthur or Loki before Odin. Image

Paul’s thinking in 1 Cor 7:5 is based on the Hebrew idea that wife & husband come together as “one flesh” or “one self”. The authority (exousiazō) they have over each other (7:4) is like the authority (or liberty) one has over one’s self (7:37; 8:9; 9:4-6). This is Paul’s logic not only in 1 Cor 7:5 but also in Eph 5:28-31 where he tells husbands to love their wives as their own selves. Now, Paul’s logic in 1 Cor 7:5 only works if both husband and wives have equal authority and equal submission.

When Paul teaches women to submit to their husbands (Eph 5:21-22), complementarians fail to understand that submission is a characteristic of Christian life. Indeed, submission is the method of achieving Kingdom success. 1/7 Hence, Jesus employed submission as a method (Phil 2:7; John 13:5-20). Note Jesus ties submission/servanthood to his work on the cross (Matt 20:25-28; Mark 10:41-45; Luke 22:24-27). The disciples are told to imitate Christ in all this. 2/7
