Great to see NSW numbers down to single digits and huge testing. Also, in defence of NSW contact tracers, some saying they should be publishing more sites like workplaces. Just like in Vic, workplaces and family clusters aren’t released publicly as everyone is contacted directly.
This fact was always known in Victoria but that didn’t stop many people here (you know who you are) accusing DHHS contact tracers of being incompetent because they weren’t publishing every covid site and workplace. Let’s not see same unreasonable behaviour criticising NSW Health.
I’ve also seen people saying ‘look at how many sites NSW publish - they didn’t do this in incompetent Victoria’. Again - please be reasonable and think before making unfair comparisons. Vic was barely back open when undetected spread took off in June, mainly through households.
I never thought it was fair to compare DHHS contact tracing - where by time they found undetected spread there was 4 weeks of cases - with NSW Health having 1 case over border, putting out spot fires. NSW Health are dealing with 2 weeks undetected spread and showing it’s not easy
We saw it wasn’t easy for DHHS and people like me constantly called on the chief criticisers to accept contact tracing is not a perfect science, particularly when dealing with undetected spread. These same people seem to have accepted NSW Health are having hard time of it too.
I’m sure it’s frustrating for Victorians to be seeing the same people who threw insult after insult at Victorian contact tracers now calling for unity when it comes to NSW Health. But fact is, we are all in this together - NSW’s fate is the country’s fate. They need our support.

Scott Morrison is to blame for dividing the nation when the second wave hit in Victoria. Before that, the whole country was in this pandemic together. It was Morrison who branded the outbreak the 'Victorian wave'. He is to blame for the division that followed. A thread👇
Of course, many media outlets were happy to assist Morrison in "branding it the Victorian wave". When they should have been calling Morrison out for this toxic, divisive politicisation of the pandemic, they were instead assisting him to promote his message. Image
I don't know where this came from as I only found the screen print. It records that Morrison specifically clarified that it was not a 'second wave' but a 'Victorian wave'. Thanks Scott! Image

I would like everyone to learn how to avoid playing the blame game on here. The blame game - modelled by Federal Libs and Murdoch media - is the worst way to deal with covid outbreak. It simplifies and distorts what’s happening, and undermines community confidence. A thread👇🏻
So what do I mean by blame game? I’ve found with my research that political and media narratives simplify complex situations and events into black and white versions of reality. This simplification can distort reality and also becomes a lens through which future events are seen.
A perfect example of this narrative simplification - led by Morrison and Murdoch - is that Andrews was entirely responsible for Victorian second wave due to security guard leak from quarantine and ‘failed’ contact tracing system. This simplified audience understanding of covid.

Two Murdoch 'journalists' told me I was in 'bad humour' and to 'delete my account' because I said Northern Beaches locals prefer to remain there (which is fact and not a put down). Is this a good time to remind you how everyone treated Victorians during second wave? A thread👇
Helpfully, the Herald Sun (Murdoch's Herald Sun!!!) collated some of the memes that were spreading around social media when Victoria's second wave hit. I'm sure the people sharing them thought it was all in good humour, but Victorians didn't enjoy it.

I saw this one shared a lot. I know many Victorians felt hurt that they were being singled out as to blame for their covid outbreak, because they told me.

Contact tracing is important to dealing with covid, but isn’t a silver bullet. If you don’t believe me, check out what’s happening in South Korea. Their contact tracing really is gold standard, using electronic methods (our app doesn’t work). Yet they now have 1000 cases a day.
I always said it was dangerously simplistic for Morrison and much of media in turn to blame Victorian outbreak on 'bad contact tracing' while calling NSW gold standard. Covid spread is too complex to explain by one attack line. Complexity is explained here
The focus only on contact tracing was and still is a political narrative, when what the public needed was proper analysis of all the factors which contribute to spread of covid, and the reality of undetected cases. It did nothing to inform the public of risk of covid outbreaks.

Jeez, this is in SA territory the day we locked down. Surely NSW have to at least consider a short sharp lockdown to knock this on its head? I know it would be devastating at Christmas, but that’s not a reason not to do it.
Or maybe just lockdown the northern beaches? I worked for two years in that part of Sydney and have memories of the locals calling it the ‘insular peninsula’. Maybe it’s time to be really insular just for a short time?
Next minute... insular peninsula it is. Sorry everyone who has to lockdown - horrible time of year to be staying in 🙁

This couple is going to be pilloried obviously. Some of you might be surprised to hear this but I do have some sympathy for them. They at least got tested - they must have thought there was zero percent chance they had covid since there have been no community cases for weeks.
The biggest issue with covid spread - as we saw at start of Victorian second wave - is people who have covid and don’t get tested. This is where covid goes undetected and can rapidly spread unbeknownst to contact tracers. I stand by my opinion this is how Vic second wave blew up.
I also reiterate that the focus only on contact tracing in Victoria - politicised narrative kicked off by Morrison, spread by Murdoch hacks - ignored fact undetected spread has nothing to do with contact tracing and reality is if people don’t get tested, risk of major outbreaks.
