I think... many people... don’t actually understand the Tuskegee Experiment.

I’ve listened and you won’t regret it.

And I want to be very clear: we know there are specific reasons Black people have a mistrust for doctors and the medical profession. There is a history of racism, sexism, LGBTQ-antagonism, and fatphobia.

Medical racism has existed and in many ways still do.

And, while Black men weren’t infected with syphilis in this instance, we also know Black people have been picked and prodded by the U.S. government. It’s part of what I discuss throughout my LGBT Health Law and Policy course.

And I still believe we owe it to ourselves and our community to be honest about history, and the Tuskegee Experiment in particular.

I just want us to be especially careful when we have so much misinformation going around—including things that could be life saving for so many.

Comparing Tuskegee to the COVID-19 vaccine is unhelpful and ahistorical, and we owe it to ourselves to tell the WHOLE story. Our fears are valid. They must be respected as do the understanding that the pandemic may not go anywhere soon, unless... unless.
