THREAD. After months of demands by people across the country to #ExtendUI and more - a short-term relief bill was passed by Congress. It’s far from enough, and in the new year we will demand they provide more support to ensure a #JustRecovery. Here’s what’s in the new bill...1/9
Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) extended:
- Expansions of unemployment eligibility to those excluded from state UI programs under PUA are extended for 11 weeks to mid-March
- An additional 11 weeks of PUA for up to 50 weeks total… 2/9
Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) extended:
- PEUC extension of unemployment payments to those who exhaust maximum weeks of state UI renewed for 11 weeks to mid-March
- An additional 11 weeks of PEUC for up to 24 weeks total… 3/9
Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) restored:
- FPUC weekly supplement to all unemployment benefit payments restored at only $300 per week for 11 weeks to mid-March
- $300 weekly supplement has no retroactivity; people need MORE… 4/9
New weekly supplement for mixed earnings recipients:
- $100 per week supplement for benefit recipients with mixed employee and self-employment earnings for 11 weeks to mid-March… 5/9
Up to 4 weeks of pandemic unemployment benefits after March 14:
- people approved for PUA or PEUC with eligible weeks remaining can receive up to 4 of those weeks until the week of April 5… 6/9
One-time $600 payment for most people who earned less than $75K in 2019:
- excludes undocumented people while not excluding their mixed-status household members
- more is needed; $600 isn’t enough for people in a pandemic
- + aid is needed for excluded worker funds 7/9
Passing these emergency relief measures and expanding & extending them further in the new year is an urgent humanitarian and racial justice issue. People face record hunger and homelessness, with Black, indigenous, immigrant, women and people of color bearing the most harm. 8/9
THIS IS SHORT-TERM PARTIAL RELIEF. PEOPLE NEED MORE than an 11-week extension, more than 11 extra weeks, more than a $300 supplement, more than $600 stimulus in this pandemic. NELP will #KeepFighting to #ExtendUI and for a #JustRecovery overall. 9/9
