To fulfill the aspirations of every family to have piped water supply in their home, #JalJeevanMission aims to provide tap water connection to every rural household by 2024 so that people do not have to wait in a queue to fetch water or depend on tankers/ trains during summers.

#JalJeevanMission aims for universal coverage of all rural households by following the principle of ‘equity and inclusiveness’, i.e. every family in the village gets tap water connection and ‘no one is left behind’.

The provision of household tap connection in rural areas under #JJM will certainly be a boon in removing ‘drudgery’ of women, especially girls, as they will no longer have to bear the burden of fetching water from a distance. Potable tap water in home brings 'ease of living'.

Assured supply of potable tap water in household premises under #JJM will not only help in curbing water-borne diseases but saves time. It will also help people living in rural areas, especially women, to devote time towards economic activities.

#JJM is a decentralized, demand-driven, community-managed programme with GP and/ or its sub-committee, i.e. Village Water and Sanitation Committee (VWSC), Paani Samiti playing a key role in planning, implementation, management, O&M of in-village water supply systems.

To ensure the decision-making role of women and weaker sections in managing water supply in their villages, under #JJM, half of the Paani Samiti/ VWSC members have to be women and proportionate representation from weaker sections of society.

Under #JJM, every village prepares a #VillageActionPlan (VAP) for 5 years by dovetailing resources of different schemes at the village level. VAP to focus on strengthening of drinking water sources, water supply, greywater reuse and operation & maintenance.

50% of #FinanceCommission grants to rural local bodies/ PRIs is for providing assured potable water supply and improved sanitation in villages. This is another step towards strengthening 'gram swarajya'.

Under #JalJeevanMission, priority is given to saturating villages in water-stressed areas, quality-affected areas, #AspirationalDistricts, SC/ ST majority villages, Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna (SAGY) villages, Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), etc.

#JM gives highest priority to potability of drinking water, which has huge impact on water-borne diseases and public health. States/ UTs to ensure accreditation of water quality testing laboratories and open them to people so that they get water samples tested at nominal rates.

Under @jaljeevan_, for water quality surveillance, at least 5 persons especially women in every village, are trained on using Field Test Kits (FTKs) to test water quality at village level. Constant vigil on the quality of water will help in controlling water-borne diseases.

With the aim to create a pool of skilled human resource in villages, emphasis on skilling of people in villages to prepare cadre of masons, plumbers, pump operators, fitter, motor mechanics, etc. This will help in creating and managing water supply systems.

In 2019 on #GoodGovernanceDay, PM @narendramodi released the operational guidelines for implementation of #JalJeevanMission.

States/ UTs are working tirelessly to ensure tap water connection to every rural household.

Since the release of guidelines, over 2.91 Crore families living in rural areas got tap water connection in their homes under #JJM.

Now, 32% of country's rural families have assured tap water supply in homes improving their quality of life & bringing 'ease of living'.

26 districts across the country have become #HarGharJal districts, i.e. every rural household in the district has assured tap water supply in their home.

To reduce vulnerability of children from water-borne diseases and in the context of #CoVid-19 pandemic,100-day campaign launched to provide assured tap water supply to every anganwadi centre, ashramshala & school, which will improve health and well-being of children. @UNICEF @WHO
